I heard one of the most profound things about parenthood last night. It was some television show, or movie, I don't really know. I didn't stop to watch. But from what I gathered, they were talking about bad parents. This guy said, "You need a license to drive a car. You need a license to buy a dog. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish. But you don't need a license to have a kid." My jaw dropped, because I'd never thought about it that way. Its a really interesting perspective.

so, discuss.

I have heard that before.
That is similar to something I heard about abortion too. That it is illegal to kill the eggs of birds that are on the endangered species list but it is not illegal to kill a baby human that is not born yet.

Humans have some strange issues to think about.

I've heard that. In fact, my grandma and I were just talking about this subject the other day.

There are some parents in the world who are good parents and some who aren't. The good ones actually take care of their kids. The bad ones leave them with a babysitter so they can go party and drink.

I know a family who lives by me. Now its none of my buisness why they do what they do....but they have seven kids, a 2 bedroom house, an 8 passenger car, and another one[kid] in the oven. The parents aren't even 30 yet and the oldest kid is 9 and is in 3rd grade. They let the children run around in just diapers[full diapers at that] and barefeet. They[the kids] play in the street when cars are coming and the parents get mad at the cars when they honk their horn. Call me crazy, but I'd take the kid in the house and punish them. And the kids run down the street while the parents sit on the front porch drinking or smoking. In the summer, they have parties every weekend and they let the kids stay up til 2-3 o'clock in the morning. And then at 8 o'clock, the kids are out playing again.

I mean like I said, its none of my buisness but the kids are out of control. They control the parents. The parents take um inside, the kid smacks the parent, and the kid runs outside to keep doing what he was doing.

So I think if you need a license to drive a car, catch a fish, or own a dog, you NEED a license to have a kid.

I will probably never have kids.

People though, I think need to realize that if they aren't good parents, or don't have a genuine love for kids, that even if they are pregnant, they don't need to be a parent. They should realize, that they can give it to a family who can love the child. It's honestly awful how some parents are so cold to their children.

There is a law where I live that, within three days of birth you can drop a child off at any government building and the mother can not be charged with anything. its totally anonymous.

Personally, I think thats one of the best laws we've come up with.

Some people don't know they are bad parents, some are just too stressed to deal with their children. Some people are just crazy, and don't care about their children. Some people want to care about their children but don't know how. Some people are too young. I hate child abuse, which doesn't always mean the child is being physically hurt but it could mean neglect(kind of like the story volleyballQT told) it could mean emotional or it could be sexual. I hate child abuse, it is the one thing that I am very very very pasionate about. That is part of the reason i want to be a lawyer.

This struck me as today I am discontinuing a babysitting job that I started about two months ago.

I babysit two adorable kids ages 6 and 8. A girl and boy. They have 4 different babysitters who come for different days of the week. I babysit every Thursday and Sunday. On Thursday I babysit from 3:30-8:30 pm and on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 pm. Two other babysitters babysit on two different days of the week for similar hours and another babysitter fills in all the gaps. The mother is home with the children until 4 pm on Sundays and is gone every other day of the week. She goes to work and then out to parties. (I just recently discovered). The money to pay for these babysitters comes in through the state so it isn't her money she is spending for these sitters.

The kids don't have a dad. Their lives run around inconsistancy of what goes on (They go to school and then to daycare some days or just daycare or just school) and they have multiple babysitters throughout the week. The little boy was almost in tears because he was upset he never saw his mom.

She takes advantage of me and of the state money. I will not go into details, but there are definite reasons I am stopping this lol.

Sorry to go on about that, but your post right there really nagged me when I read it since that is exactly what this mother is.

I think some child neglect laws are over the top though.

Where I live it is technically "environmental neglect" to have a child's bed without fitted sheets.

Personally, I think that food, love, shelter are a little more important than sheets.

For all you who are saying that you need a license to have a child, what would your standards be?

A Test?
A Trial-Run?

You can't test or trial run having a baby. I think its pretty stupid if you think you should have to have a license to give birth.

Sure, why not? They make you before you adopt a child. It wouldn't hurt to get a backgound check.

People who work a lot or don't spend as much time with their children as other, they aren't bad parents. It takes a lot to be a bad parent.

I have a very very strong opinion on child abuse in any way. Emotional, Sexual or Physical it doesn't matter, it's wrong.

I would need to take a up three pages to tell my thoughts about bad parents.

A test, or trial run, come on people! Sometimes adults don't know they're going to be parents. A liscense, no. Do you know how long that would take?

What we do need is more foster homes and more people to be social workers or at least help out.

A background check would do nothing to justify whether or not you should have children.

it would bring up sexual abuse charges.

It would also show mental disorders, since some require a physiological analysis
.
that alone should be enough to justify it.

A little 9 year old boy was sexually assaulted repetitively by his father and his grandfather while his mother just sat there and watched. they then strangled him and put him in a garbage bag, and left on the side of the street. That happened this weekend.

That is why people should have to be mentally stable, financially stable, and relatively normal to have children.

That alone is most definitely not enough to justify it. What about those people who care about their work more than their kids? What about those people who have done horrible things in their past, but have moved on and would then be great parents?

Yeah but do you know how much confusion that would cause. And time, that would take forever. Trust me it takes like forever for them to get your background check back.

That would never work. Nothing's going to change.

People who don't have enough time for children now, are not bad parents.

That is an awesome law. That is a very awesome law. That is a law that deserves a supercalifragilisticexbealidocious because it's so awesome. Wow. I love that law.

It's a law around here that if there are children under the age of 8 or 9 (don't remember) without an 8 or 9 year old there, the parents are fined. There are charges against them.

My family is a foster home. We have fostered 10+ children. Some have been bad and we've seen their old homes. We've seen the damage done. One in particular had a huge scar running across her face. She says her father did it when she was around 5. Imagine that. It's depressing. I love being a foster family. Another story is of a little girl who hit. She hit and hit and hit. She hit when she was just a little mad. She was very physical. Imagine her past. It's hideous. For my foster program, we had to wait, one time, 5 years before getting another child. There either is a.) a lot of foster families or b.) not that many abuses.

every case is different. Thats what a psychological analysis could show. A sociopath does not need children. Theres no real way to deny that.:confused3 . A mentally unstable person does not need children. Children are enough to make the sanest person in the world crazy, let alone an already unstable one. Now, yeah, there are exceptions to everything. I'm sure there are some really nice sociopaths out there. and there are some great reformed murderers who would make good parents, and those that would, would pass the psychological analysis, but those that wouldn't, won't.
