Children sharing kids' meals? Adults sharing?

Hi All -- we are going for Spring Break and considering paying OOP/no dining plan. We have 3 six year olds and often when out to eat we will split two kids' meals between them. Is this allowed at table service restaurants (such as Ohana)? What about adults sharing plated meals/non buffet meals? Thanks!

It's fine. But the Disney kids' meals are quite small. You might end up needing one for each kid. And no, you can't split at 'Ohana. 'Ohana is an all you can eat family style restaurant and charges per person, not per meal, so you'll have to pay the same price for all three kids.

No sharing is permitted at buffets, all you can eat family style restaurants (like 'Ohana or Garden Grill), fixed price, fixed menu restaurants (like CRT or Akershus) or dinner shows. The only restaurants I've seen reported that charge an extra plate fee are Shula's and Rainforest Cafe. It's also been reported that Beaches & Cream does not allow guests on the dining plan to share entrees but it's apparently OK to do so if you're not on the dining plan.

OK, thanks! Actually at Ohana our kids don't eat off the skewers or from the family serving bowls, we order the kids' nuggets/fries for them and the servings are quite large so I guess I would just need to ask our server about that one.

My mom and I split plates at Marrakesh. I don't recall if there was a plate splitting fee. And I don't think Disney really cares because if you split your meal you'll probably order dessert. ;)

Our kids have always loved the kids' items at Ohana, too! They have always charged us the same price per child, even if our kids only eat the kids' items like the chicken nuggets, etc. Same at Garden Grill, Chef Mickey's, Liberty Tree for dinner - any restaurant with a fixed price, they have charged us separately for everyone 3 and over, regardless of the items they bring for the kids. Same as TDC Nala mentioned.

We share a lot at other places, like Mama Melrose, Sci-Fi, etc. and we'll plan to share on our upcoming trip, too. When our two older boys were 5 and 6, they thought the kids' meals were small and always ordered their own kids' meals. But our youngest rarely eats a whole kids' meal by himself, so we might order 2 regular meals and 2 kids meals and everyone shares with the youngest.

And have a great trip with those triplets - what a fun age and a great time for WDW!

'Ohana will charge per child no matter which menu they order from.

Children two and under may share at any buffet style restaurants without being charged separately.

Agree with all above posters. Except I will say that we often share plates and find that it is often enough food. Perhaps one exception to this rule would be the highest end places. The double credit places have smaller portions, so there one entree woudn't probably be enough for two adults unless you maybe pair with an appetizer.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Most servers I've found to be very honest about protion sizes and whether each would be enough to share.

Ironically, the QS place portions are often among the largest.

For CS why not get them adult meals and have them split that? The kids meals are small.

Next trip DS will be 10 and a Disney adult. I plan on him sharing his adult meals with DD 4. Plenty of food!!

Frankly, If people want to share, it's none of their business. When my wife and I go to a restaurant that charges a split plate fee one of us orders an entree, the other a small side salad. We share both. It's about the same cost as the split plate fee, but you get the salad for your trouble instead of nothing. Once we finish the salad we use that plate to share. We have never had a problem with this.

We often split meals at Disney (and elsewhere too). Of course, not at fixed price places, though. But I usually make our ADRs to take this into account and only select a la carte type places. For our family (DH, me, and 2 DD teens), 4 full meals is just too much. Depending on where we are and what people want to order, I may share a meal with one of the girls or the girls may share, etc. Sometimes we get 3 meals and an appetizer, etc. Sometimes we only get 2 meals if we know they are big portions. We have never had problems doing this.

Here is a list of places that we have shared at Disney with no problems. (These are all non DDP, since we haven't done that due to our eating style)
Sci Fi (DH & I shared steak sandwich - he ordered chili app too) (Girls shared ribs)
Beaches and Cream (the 4 of us shared a chicken sandwich meal and a burger meal cut in half and then all shared a fudge mud slide)
Mama Melrose (DD & I shared chicken parmesan)
Kona Cafe (DD & I shared the terriyaki steak meal)
Yak & Yeti (DD & I shared the steak & shrimp meal; other dd just got potsticker appetizer)
Rainforest Cafe (DDs shared steak, ribs & shrimp trio; I ate the free appetizer that comes with safari club- pita quesadilla)
TRex (I ate an add on ribs that we ordered with someone's meal and shared fries with DD who got a burger) We really should have only ordered 2 meals here because it was a lot of food and we still had lots left over with only ordering 3 meals.

That's all I can think of right now.

I took my mom a few years ago, and we shared almost every one of our meals.

The only plate that charged us the extra plate was RFC - but it was just a $1.00. Still cheaper as far as I concerned then ordering two meals and throwing 1/2 of it away.

Enjoy!
