Chicken & Waffles

I had to laugh at the Podcasters amazment of chicken and waffles served together. This is a very traditional soul food combination. At the right restaurant this is a yummy thing to order in my humble opinion but I guess I am used to "weird" southern food combinations. I am not sure if this should be served at a Louisiana style restaurant but maybe they thought since it is soul food it would fit in. It's not so strange when you consider what might be served at a typical brunch. I was fortunate for a few years that my sister would pay for my mother and me for the three of us to go to the Ritz Carlton for Mother's Day brunch and I pigged out on oysters, crab legs, omelets, different cheeses, eggs benedict, etc.

I don't think chicken and waffles is such a strange concept. I do think it is interesting that those two specific items have turned into a particular meal, however.

Touché. And if you want to be really authentic you should use cane syrup instead of maple syrup on your waffles - or biscuits. (Funnily enough, cane syrup was developed in Louisiana - so maybe that is the origin of chicken & waffles being on the Boatwright's menu. I doubt it but you never know.)

I haven't had it either but it sounds good to me. Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles has been popular in LA since the 70's.

Karo syrup is corn syrup. But cane syrup is probably close to light corn syrup - maybe not as thick. I do know people who use Karo syrup on stuff though, so your DH wouldn't be the odd man out in some circles. (Not my circle, mind you. But some circles. )

Y'know, the more I think about it, the less strange it sounds. I remember as a kid my mother used to serve fried chicken with corn fritters, and we always put syrup on those (MAPLE syrup, not Karo!). It doesn't really sound like all that much difference. Just seems a little weird to have something that's so very breakfasty with something so NOT breakfasty.

I didn't think chicken and waffles sounded strange at all. That is not unheard of. I guess it's more southern, just not creole as was expected.

Just the other day I made Sauteed Lobster Open Face over French Toast. The combination of sweet and savory is very common. Look at the Montecristo.

Have you been watching Scooby-Doo reruns, Kevin? I don't know if Shaggy and Scooby would try some of those.

I think chicken and waffles sounds okay, but the overall review will keep us out of Boatwrights. Sad little crawfish cake.
