we thought about doing a character meal at Magic Kingdom.

407-WDW-DINE is the number to call to make reservations. (I don't know if you already have the number or not, so I figured I'd throw it in. ) Give them a call and if there's nothing, just keep checking back. You can even try for last minute openings with Guest Services in the park that day or check at the podium of the actual location you'd like. (You may not get in, or you may have a super-long wait, so it depends on how desperate you are to get in. This approach won't work for CRT though because it's pre-paid.) Good Luck!

You can also call this toll free number 1-800-828-0228. Press "3" for dining when asked.
You may be too late but keep trying as someone may cancel. You could also try walking up when your there.
