Cheesecake question

This may be a very unusual question, but I figured the DIS would have an answer.

Would it be possible to use food coloring to dye the filling of a cheesecake orange? Would it affect the flavor? What about "decorating" it after it's been dyed orange? (I'm thinking chocolate syrup, but I'm not sure if that's too liquidy and would just run all over the place)

I dont know, make one and I will taste it for you

Yep, you could use food coloring in a cheesecake.

You're right about the chocolate syrup- it would be pretty runny. But you can get tubes of either a chocolate decorating gel or chocolate decorating frosting that would work, you should be able to find them in little tubes in the grocery store.

:sunny:

(a little more background ... we're doing a "bake off" at work for Halloween, and my idea was to try and make a cheesecake that looks like a jack-o-lantern, without ruining the taste)

Rather than the standard liquid food coloring I'd suggest you use paste food coloring. It doesn't add unnecessary liquid and it's very concentrated.

KathyTx has a great idea about using those squirty decorator frosting can thingys to draw the face on. They make a chocolate brown. This time of year you might even find black.

Good luck.

Here's what the gel looks like:

This works well for writing or for small designs. Or you can outline an area with icing then fill it in with the gel.

The icing looks like this:

It kind of resembles a toothpaste tube. You can buy very inexpensive tips for the tube to pipe different shapes, like stars, on your project. This would probably be a great choice for a project like yours.

Then there's the frosting in an aerosol can:

This comes with different tips included. It's lots of fun to let kids decorate cookies or cupcakes with this, and it could work well for your project if you don't need a high degree of precision in the design.

Have fun with your cheesecake!

Why not make a pumpkin cheesecake?

Sorry - I don't have a recipe. They give this away at the cafeteria where I work every year. MMM GOOD!

a good idea, but I don't like pumpkin-flavored stuff. (and I'm not a big fan of baking something that I wouldn't eat ;))

Chocolate ganache is a real nice topping for cheesecake and it is so easy to make. Just heat together equal amounts of heavy cream and baker's chocolate, stirring until the chocolate melts. It is liquid when warm, but cools to a fudgy, icing like consistency and if you don't touch it while it cools it gets very glossy. And it tastes great, like the inside of a truffle! In fact if you have any left over, let it cool, roll teaspoons of it into balls and roll in cocoa or powdered sugar- instant truffles!
