Checking stroller on plane?

Has anyone ever checked their stroller with their luggage? Do you use any type of bag? We usually gate check ours but our kids are big enough that they don't need it right away and it would be nice not to have to lug the stroller through security. Ours is a fairly cheap double umbrella stroller but I still don't want it to get ruined by getting thrown around too much.

We have checked ours most of the time. It's a big jogging stroller, though, so we have a specific bag for it. For an umbrella stroller, you may still want to find a bag for it. I've seen people use just a garbage or large plastic bag for them, but I don't know how well those work overall. If you choose that route, you may want to pack and extra or two for the trip back home.

There is less chance of damage if you gate check the stroller. If you check with your luggage, I agree that you need to get a sturdy bag for it.

I checked our Maclaren once only to see them throw it onto the belt that brings it to the luggage on the plane. I then saw our stroller roll down and hit the tarmac, the sun cover was ruffed up and the stroller was then filthy, the airlines denied all of it! After that I made a bag out of sheet for the stroller and only gate check.

Now with our new SN stroller I did spend the money to get the bag. The stroller will only be gate checked and with the bag.

You do realize that when you gate check it the stroller goes into the same place as when you check it at the counter/curb. It will also be put on the belt to go up to the hold.

Very true, I have seen them all go up and then see ours go back, do bag the stroller.
