Checking car seats???

Does anyone know if car seats are considered "extra baggage" and will we have to pay to check them?

We have always been told that they do not count as baggage, but I would call your specific airline to find out for sure.

They are not extra baggage as long as you gate check them. I dunno about checking them with luggage, but I wouldn't do that anyways because the chance of your carseat being mishandled and damaged is really high.

We gate checked 2 car seats and one large double jogging stroller in March when we flew Delta. Never check your car seats. They go through so much torture that they would have to be scrapped and you would have to get a new one. The airline does not consider them luggage and you are not charged extra for them. There is a place on the plane for "delicate" things, like wheelchairs, car seats, and strollers. They don't have to go on any conveyor belts or anything that way.

When we got to the gate we put a special tag on our seats and stroller that the gate attendant gave us and the airline personnel packed them on and off the plane for us. It took a few minutes to get the stroller after we de-planed, but it was no big deal. DH just took care of the seats and stroller while I took care of the two littles, worked out great.

Yep, Same experience here...We have always gate checked our car seat and stroller, they will give you a tag at the gate counter, it was not considered extra luggage at the time. I have always been advised against checking them as baggage due to the tossing and jostling of the seats, can simulate a 'crash'. It is a slight pain taking everything to the gate, but we usually take the stroller more for the ease of piling on the car seats, and carryons, and had everything waiting for us when we got off the plane. It really was a breeze! HTH
