Checking a BOX as luggage?

I always seem to see boxes come around the carousel at the airport, but hadn't really thought about it until now. I have to bring down a bunch of clothing to give to someone in Florida, and I don't want to have to lug another suitcase back with me. How should I "prepare" the box? Does it have to be opened and searched - therefore I can't tape it shut? If so, how do I secure it? Anything else I should do/not do?

Before you go out and get a box, check your carriers website, most only allow 50 lbs, and it needs to fit a certain size. If you go over size or weight those will be very expensive closther you are giving away. FEdEX ground might be cheaper.

I have checked boxes as luggage many times with no problems on several different US based carriers. You should have no trouble checking a box as luggage on any US airline. Just make sure it does not exceed weight limits.

Also, the box WILL be opened when you check your luggage and searched, so just lightly seal the top. The agent will have tape to reseal the box, although you may want to bring your own.

Some airlines consider cardboard boxes to be insufficient packaging.

I don't know of any airline which has this policy. I've seen a lot of luggage checked in a lot less sturdy packaging than a cardboard box!

The box is 12.5" x 20" x 9" - smaller than most I've seen, and light enough for me to lift easily. It's like two boxes, with the outer "lid" fitting down over the under-piece. I'm tempted to mail it, but it makes sense to bring it down with me if I can transport it for free as a piece of checked luggage. I'll check with Delta first, and if I'm allowed to bring it, I'll reinforce the bottom/top and corners with tape and then bring more with me to seal the box after it's been searched, just in case I need it. Thank you!

You can always get a cheap suitcase at a thrift store or Goodwill and pack the clothes in that to check. Our thrift store usually has bags/suitcases for under $5.

As weird as this sounds, some airlines have seasonal restrictions on checking boxes as luggage on some routes. Definitely check with your airline about your specific dates.

They will ask you to sign a waiver stating that you are aware that the box is not adaquate packing for airline travel and therefore they are not responsible for damage. No biggie if you've packed it well and they reseal it properly (that's the key)

How about putting the clothes into a cheap duffel bag. Then you can either leave the duffel at your destination or fold it up and bring it back. Probably easier than a box and you wouldn' have to worry about the search.

Good point on the duffel (my ex husband's wife is taking the clothes, and I'm trying to avoid leaving them with another suitcase). I've already packed the box and laziness is really setting in, but I'll look around for one!
