Check Your Flights--They Changed Ours Without Telling Us

Even though we booked our flights for our Nov. 22 trip through a travel agent (we get a discount on air rates through my company's agency), neither United nor the TA notified us that our return flight had been cancelled. Fortunately they had already rebooked us on another one, complete with the same seat assignments. But if I hadn't called due to being a paranoid planner, goodness only knows when I would have found out. I'm guessing that, with all the turmoil lately, they are probably way behind in notifications or perhaps not doing them at all.

I've learned the hard way that it is a very good idea to check on your air reservations at least once a week if you make them more than a couple of months in advance. Given the current situation, it's even more important. If you find out early, you have a much better chance of getting the flight(s) that will be best for you. Most airlines automatically assign you to another flight. We've been changed form a non-stop flight to a connecting flight many times. When I catch a change, I call right away and so far have not had a problem getting put on a flight that I like. Of course, the flight you want must still have space available, so it is better to call right away. Many airlines do not notify you until a few weeks before departure. That's often too late to get a better flight - as they are now full.

Airlines frequently change their schedules. Don't wait for your TA or airline to notify you. Check yourself and act quickly to get the best outcome.

Amen to your advice to keep checking!!! I used to only check the day before our flight--the only reason I did it early was because of all the problems with air travel lately, and I am glad I did. We lucked out by being placed on a good alternate flight, but I'm guessing that doesn't happen too often!! With this trip, it would be especially important to get home early because I have to go to work that day.

When you check on your flight...

Whether you notice a change in your itinerary on-line or by calling, ask about a price difference. Don't automatically assume that just because they rebooked you on a different flight that it costs the same. With airfares dropping, the new flights may be cheaper, but they won't tell you unless you ask!!!

We saved $228 by doing this!!! I hope some of you can save some money, too!:D :D
