I've been talking to my brother (who lives in Florida) several times a day recently - dealing with my mom's health (she'll be 92 in September)..
Anyhow - last night we were finally able to have a "lighter" conversation and he was telling me that one day he wandered on to one of those sites and did a search on our mom.. (Medicaid is paying for her nursing home care now that we paid out the last of her money; gave them the trust funds she had set up for each of us; etc..)
Anyhow - back to the site.. My brother found two different places listed for my mom and the total was a very significant amount of money.. (They were set up by our late father for mom, but he never told anyone - not even her..) Since my brother is now the POA for mom, he was able to claim the money from both sources and then contact Medicaid to let them know.. They told him what needed to be done - and of course he did it.. He doesn't want any headaches once mom passes - it's the right thing to do - and he certainly doesn't need the money himself..
Talk about shocked!! I remember hearing my dad toss around the names of these two places, but had no idea he had set something up in each place for mom..
So I wanted to share this for all of you out there who may have elderly parents so you can do a search yourself.. Back when I was a kid (in the 50's and 60's) parents didn't really discuss too much about their financial affairs with their children, so your parents (alive or deceased) may have money out there that you are totally unaware of..
Good luck with your searches!
