I'm not sure if this is budget related, but it is money related so............

My son received a scholarship for his art just recently, so they applied half to first semester, which was already paid for and the other half to this semester, which isn't paid for yet.

However, they sent him a refund check for the overpayment for first semester. The check is in his name (like he pays for his tuition). We are no longer on his account.

What do I do with this check? Can I deposit it to his account without him signing it and then have him make a withdrawal or can I have him sign the back of the check over to me and then deposit it to our account. And does he need to be with me? If he can sign it over to me what exactly does it say? He is only 30 minutes away, but it's not convienent.

I'm just going to use the money to pay off his tuition for this semester. Yeah!!!!!

Can't he cash the check then take the money to the registrar (or whoever) and apply it to this semsester's tuition? Why do you need to be involved at all?

Because I have the check and he is at school. It was mailed to the home address. AND........I don't trust him with this money. He has a friend that's a girl that he's not dating but would love to and all his money seems to disappear to her! He buys her things, lots of things, he once paid for her ferrets vet bill because her mom wouldn't. It's to weird to explain, but I know some of this money will be spent on her. He's very generous with a big heart and can't see that she uses him for things. I know he's 19 and he can do whatever, but this money is for school only not for spending friviously.

The check does need to be signed before you can deposit it so you'll either have to mail it to him for signing or take it to him.

I have signed checks for my son who is only 15, deposited them in my account and then just pulled out the money for him less the amount he is required by me to save in his savngs account.

I don't know if you can sign the check for your son though since he's over 18. Probably not....

We deposit cheques into kids accounts all the time. We USED to be able to third party it (they signed it over to us, we got cash for them or deposited into our account) but now, the one bank won't let us do that. So they have to do that part themselves (give us the money). What a pain! Your bank will tell you which route to take.

My kids have 529 plans and all the money comes in their names. I wrote "For Deposit Only," put my account number under it put it in my bank account. I was never questioned and never had any trouble.

I know with my bank all you need to do is put for deposit only on the back and it should be able to be deposited

Can you sign his name? I know it's technically forgery but... and then under that write Pay to the Order of (insert your name here) and then you sign it. Now, it's your check to be depostited.

You can just write FOR DEPOSIT ONLY and deposit it into his account. (Or he can sign it and deposit it if he is local) Then he can write a check or get a bank check to pay the tuition.

OR he can sign his name, you sign your name under it and deposit it into your account.

It's not that much of a big deal.

I work in a bank and like previous posters have said all you have to do is write for deposit only on the back of the check and the bank will be able to deposit it into your sons account, then he can write the check for next semester

As many have said - and I'm just repeating to add weight to the fact that this is done all the time and is okay - write "for deposit only" on the back and you can deposit into his account. I have done this for many years at 3 different banks for my parents. We also have a relative doing this for us while we are on temporary assignment away from home. Its no problem. You can even mail it to the bank.

In my experience the check has to route through your son's account. Legally you don't have any right to control that money -- only he does. Although I understand where you are coming from as a parent.

You should be able to deposit it into his account without his signature on the check. Although that may vary from bank to bank. My 19 year old also has her own bank account. In the past when she was out of town and needed a check deposited I was able to write for deposit only and deposit it into her account without a signature on the check.

The endorsement should be

{his signature}
PAY TO THE ORDER OF
{your name}
{your signature}
FOR DEPOSIT ONLY
{your account number}

When will your DS be home again? If it's soon, wait until he comes home and have him sign it over to you (he signs it and the put pay to the order of: "mom"). Then you can deposit into your account and pay the bill that needs paying.

I used to work for a bank, many moons ago and this was never allowed. Think of it like this, Joe Smith drops a check that he already endorsed on his way to the bank and doesn't realize it. Then Molly Mcbutter sees the check on the ground picks it up and writes "pay to the order of " Molly Mcbutter and deposits it into her account.

To the OP: Just write "deposit only" on the back and deposited it into your sons account. Then call him daily until he either pays the school or you, or else you can kiss that money goodbye!:rotfl:

My son does work study at his college. But they give them a pay check. He just takes it to the cashiers office signs it over to them for deposit on his account. Don't know if this is an option or not?

I also worked for a bank and it was recently. Many institutions do not allow for third party endorsements on their checks and the check must be deposited into the payee account (your sons). It is however perfectly legal to write: For deposit only and put his account number. Be aware though that you need his account number and even as his parents if you are not on the account the tellers cannot provide you with the account number even just to deposit the check. It is tough if you have somebody who is less than responsible :( I feel for you.

Well getting the check deposited sounds easy enough, but it still has to be into his account, unless you two have a joint account for tuition purposes or something. But it still puts the money into his hands as if you mailed the check over to him. I'd hang onto it till he comes home for the weekend so you can go to the bank together to get it done. At only a 1/2 hour away, I'd assume he'd be home often enough for free laundry services and a good meal.

Can you sign his name? I know it's technically forgery but... and then under that write Pay to the Order of (insert your name here) and then you sign it. Now, it's your check to be depostited.

In NY that would be a felony punishable by 1-3 years in state prison (and that's the minimum).

OP here, all is taken care of now. I drove to his school and we went to the bank together. We both signed the back of the check at the bank and it was deposited into my account. This saves him the work of having to redeposit it into my account.

I get points if I use my card for paying his tuition. So there is motive there. Also, he doesn't have a check book yet, just his debit card. I asked on these boards last fall if their college kids had checkbooks and most did not. He might need one for next fall when he lives in an apartment off campus.

Anyway, thanks for all your help.
