Is it better to do on line check in or just wait until we get there? Also is it better to do on line check in earlier or wait until we are ready to go? Wondering if you get a better room by doing it early.
I have never done it like this but I may this time. Thanks

Doesn’t matter. Your room is assigned before your arrival date.

Online check-in is useful if you don’t need a normal room key (you are using magic mobile or magic bands) and would like to skip the front desk and go straight to your room.

Doing online checkin allows them to send you a text message with your room number when your room is ready. You can check the room number on the map that also comes with the text. If you submitted a room location request and your request wasn't met, you can go to the front desk before you go to your room and ask if it's possible to move you. We love being able to go straight to our room without having to stand in line at the desk!

Jumping in on this thread with a related question. When we last went to WDW in 2018, I remember is international guests couldn't use direct-to-room, even when we completed online check-in, we always had to go to the front desk. I am correct that this is no longer true? With the magic mobile, everyone can go directly to their room, whether US or international guests?

Yes, from the U.K. and I was able to use online check in last month.

Just to add that the resort/room charge was held in full against the connected credit card, plus a USD 100 hold.

This is an important note.

Whatever credit or debit card you put down will have the room charge + incidental hold on it. This will happen regardless of how you check in but in person you can switch to another card at the last second. You can do online check in and then visit the front desk to switch cards, or pay with a gc, but the original hold can take up to a week to let go.
