Check in for ADR question

If we have an ADR at 5pm at regular restaurant (not signature)...

what time do we need to check in?

or rather, how many minutes (if any) ahead of time, do we have to check in at host stand?

at 5pm?

at 4:55pm?

at 4:45pm?

at 4:40pm?

Can I ask why 20 minutes? Is that the official Disney policy? I want to follow the rules. However, I did not see a check in time listed in the Dining brochure.

I am used to checking in 5 min ahead of time at restaurants here at home.

With twin 2.5 year old toddlers, I am trying to gauge what time to make ressies and 20 minutes to wait is a long time for toddlers.

Is it possible for Dad to check in 20 min ahead of time and for me to arrive closer to 5pm ressie time? Is that acceptable?

Disney used to recommend checking in 20 minutes prior. I'm not sure if they still do or not, but it is what we do too.

As far as Dad checking in, they will usually ask if the whole party is there. So that won't work either. They want you all there, ready to be seated.

Do you have an I-Phone that you could load some games or videos on to help entertain your kids? Depending on what restaurant you are at, there may be shops within the site line of the restaurant you can check out.
