Can you check in early, after midnight for the day,or do you have to pay for the day before?

Any check-in before 6AM is considered a check-in for the night before. So yes, you have to pay for that night. You can't even really check in until 6AM. Computer system thing.

After midnight is technically the next day, but it's still the current day as far as your reservation is concerned. As the pp said, the computers roll over at 6 am, at which time you are able to check in. Anything prior to 6 am is considered the night before, so you would have to reserve/pay for that night to check in after midnight.

We in the hotel business actually sell you nights not days. So the hotel day runs from early morning, ie 5 or 6 am usually (Disney is 6am), till the next morning. So if you come in early as suggested by the OP you are coming in for a night and will have to pay for it.

In our leisure travel experience, and DH's business travel experience, booking that extra night is well worth it. To know that your room is there waiting for you, that you don't have to move, or wake up earlier than you wish, that that room is now yours for your stay (assuming you book at your intended resort), can be priceless. Feels wasteful until you wake up the next day. Then it feels great to be where you will stay. :)

Your room won't be ready until much later that afteroon, so where would you sleep that night if you tried checking in that early?
