Ok, in a couple of weeks we are headed to disneyland. We return at about 11:30 at night, and figured that we would just stay at the airport, since our ride home is actually about 2-3 hours away. I know the Westin is in the terminal, but it's about 130 for the night. Plus, we fly into the north terminal, not mcnamara, so we would have to take a shuttle anyway. If I have to take a shuttle to get to the hotel, do I need to stay at the airport? Has anyone stayed anyplace decent, not scary, and that you felt perfectly comfortable taking the shuttle that late at night?

There are a ton of hotels outside of the airport, and the area is very "hotels and restaurants", not scary at all. My MIL often stays at the LaQuinta there when she has early morning flights. There's also some bigger hotels, but the LaQuinta is perfectly reasonable for overnight accomodations. They have a shuttle.

I usually stay at either the Four Points Sheraton or the Westin at the airport. It isn't a scary area. It is not in Detroit proper. The only stuff near the airport is hotels etc.

When we flew out of Detroit a couple years ago we stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites and was very happy with them. They do have a shuttle to and from the airport.

If we fly down again next year we will be staying there again as they have a park & fly package... you spend the night there and then you get a weeks worth of parking for free in the lot right next door! Works for me!

I second Fairfield inn.
They are connected to Qwik Park and have shuttles to the airport regularly.

I know my BFF has stayed at best western i area before early flights and I believe the laquita in past I know she has a new place she found for or DL trip will have to ask her where.

We have stayed at the Courtyard, The Fairfield, and The Hilton Garden Inn. They all were clean and easy. We stayed with a park and fly package - much cheaper than paying for parking and a room.

Sometimes I stay overnight by the airport the night before I have an early morning flight out of DTW. Usually I stay at the Fairfield Inn. I feel very safe and comfortable there, including the times I'm staying by myself. In fact, I'd feel comfortable at most of the places in that area. I just take the normal safety precautions that I'd take anywhere.

The Fairfield Inn is reasonably priced and has good shuttle service to and from the airport.

We like the Sheraton Four Points. It has an indoor pool which helps to get the kids wore out enough to sleep the night before a trip, and for about $100 we got the room and a week's parking at the Quik Park, which has 24/7 shuttle service to both terminals. Plus there's an Elias Brothers right next door for a cheap bite to eat.

Really nothing in that area is scary, though. The whole area around the airport is restaurants and hotels, the parking lots are fences and staffed, and there's really no time of day or night when it is deserted or creepy-feeling.

When my now-teen nephew was a toddler and lived in Garden City, my mom used to fly to visit every other month and would stay at the Courtyard by DTW. After awhile my nephew started calling the Courtyard "Nana's house". Its very safe and nice and its weekend rates are very reasonable (under $100 usually). :thumbsup2

We stay at both these hotels, as well, and have never had a problem. The shuttle from North Terminal to MacNamara is very easy. The Westin has a restaurant but it's overpriced and not that great, IMO. We usually pick the Four Points instead.

If you use one of these hotels, sign up for the Starwood Preferred Guest program at www.spg.com I rack up enough points for free stays pretty quickly. At Four Points in the past, they've given me a little goody bag at check in with water and snacks for being a Starwood Preferred Guest.

I have to laugh at the not scary comment. I live 20 minutes away from the airport, and I don't consider anything in that area scary. I think any major chain you pick will be MORE then fine ;)

I'm only about 10 minutes away and thought the same thing.

I would recommend the sheraton or the westin too. Do the park and fly package. You can have a great room plus free parking while you're gone for less than it would have costed to stay somewhere cheap and pay for parking seperately.

The area is pretty safe, but there are some older motels there that can look worn down inside. We have stayed at the Days Inn. There were super nice at the reception. The shuttle was full in the morning, so they told us to drive to Quik Park, park there and their shuttle would take us over so we wouldn't miss our flight. They gave us special vouchers to do it. They were so great. The beds were super comfy. The only complaint was that I could hear the kids in adjoining rooms partying until late.

Most of the hotels are north of the airport on Merriman Rd. The airport is in Romulus and between the Airport Authority Public Safety, Wayne County Sheriff's and Romulus police it is very well patroled. (Many speed traps!) There is also a Days Inn and Comfort Inn on Middlebelt. I like Marroitts so I'd probably stay at Fairfield Inn.

Agreed. OP - You just perpetuate a stigma about Detroit that is not true. Detroit is no more 'scary' than any other large city. Sorry, I'm from the Detroit area and love it there. I think it so sad that people have such a bad perception of Michigan in general. And I'm surprised you would say that since you are from Michigan! The chain hotels at Detroit Metro - or any other airport or major city - are just fine choices.

And besides that, the airport isn't even IN Detroit. It is in a suburb.

People from the rest of Michigan (outside the metro area) are the worst in terms of how they perceive Detroit in my experience. We have friends who act like we risk our lives to go to Tigers games and can't believe DH "lets me" go to the Hoedown or Eastern Market without him, and we only live 60 or 70 miles from city limits. :confused3 Many of our friends and neighbors grew up in this town and haven't ever been to Detroit other than to drive through it on 94; their opinions of the city are based entirely on the evening news and stories they've heard (usually of the "my brother said that his friend told him that he heard..." variety). It is a shame, really. The city has so much to offer and so many people won't even consider any of it because of a reputation that is far worse than is deserved.

I guess I must clarify to those from Detroit that I offended. When I said not scary, I meant not full of bugs, gross carpet, etc. It will be me, my sister and my 7 year old son, and I don't really go anywhere that late at night usually. I don't want to have to ride a shuttle for 20 minutes, when I am flying from California, and it will seem like it is 3 am. I don't have to want to wait a half an hour for the shuttle to come, either. I completely understand that the airport is NOT in downtown Detroit. I perfectly well understand that the City of Detroit has a lot to offer. I have been to plays at its theaters, seen ballgames at it's parks, and have watched concerts at its venues. We go to Greenfield Village regularly. One thing I don't do is fly into Detroit Metro at 11:30 p.m.

One thing I hate about this board is that people are so quick to jump on the criticism bandwagon.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try to find the best deal from those!
