Not sure if here or Community Board is best~Mod's please move if needed :)
So we are about to get a miles card and have it narrowed to SW or Chase Sapphire based on our travel style/destinations/preferences.

Given today's constant diligence for identity theft and fraudulent charges, I am looking for feedback from anyone who has had good/bad experiences with either of these cards in that area. We have a family member who has Chase and have been pleased so that was helpful ~as they are for both cards,

We also drive for trips and don't travel abroad so these 2 cards seem best~Barclay is a bit more than our needs.

Thanks!:worship:

as with any credit card if there's an issue you simply call immediately and they take care of it..... it happens from time to time, and Chase was breached last year.... no biggie to keep an eye on your account and call if needed. you can set up alerts for various things also

I think they are the same bank. Both Chase cards,so I would think fraud coverage would be similar. For us, the Sapphire card miles add up quicker with 2x points on restaurants and travel categories. Those points can transfer to your SW RR account.

My main credit card is Chase Freedom and I am very happy with their fraud detection. Twice I have gotten texts about possible fraud that were fraud. The card was closed and replaced on the spot. I have also had a few false alarms when traveling but it is easy to tell them the difference. They send a text with the charge and ask if it is fraud. If you reply no nothing happens. If you reply yes they close the card and send a new one.

My DH and I both had our Chase cards compromised and both times Chase caught it and were very easy to work with. I definitely recommend them.

The first was a charge on my account in Cyprus so they stopped my card. I do wish they called because I found out when I called them to find out why my card was declined, but I was happy they cancelled the card, sent a new one, and removed the two charges.

With my DH they caught it because there was a charge in VA only an hour after my DH used the card in a different state. The VA charge was fradulant. We received an emailing to call and they immediately canceled the card, removed the charge, and sent a new card.

Thanks all~ yeah, we saw that both are thru Chase, that made the question a little easier, lol. I *think* we are going to go eith the SW based solely on the Companion Fare option. probably won't hit it but then gain, if we are really patient and don't use the bonus 53,000 miles offered to us right now, we have a pretty darn good chance as home repairs and auto repairs are staring at us in BIG numbers.

It doesn't matter if you use the RR points within the year, it's just a matter of earning 110,000 within a single calendar year for Companion Status.

But if you mostly drive for trips, why would you want the Southwest Visa? You would get 2X rewards/$ for travel expenses (hotel, parking, highway tolls, dining, car rentals, etc) from the Sapphire. The Ultimate Rewards points can be redeemed 1:1 for Southwest RR points, which means you could eventually get 2 RR for each dollar spent in those categories instead of the 1 RR point that you would get with the Southwest Visa if you want to redeem for them. But you would also have the flexibility to redeem for other loyalty programs as well and 20% off of travel when booked through the Ultimate Rewards portal even if you don't use your UR points to pay for it (or you can choose to pay partially in points and the rest on your credit card.

You don't have to have the 110,000 points sitting in your account to earn the companion pass. Southwest keeps track of the number. If you have a current Rapid Rewards account, you can logon and see the point totals and the amount needed until you reach companion pass status. The easiest way is to get the Premier and the Plus with the 50k bonus. We have had it since mid March and are getting ready for DS to fly free to Punta Cana in a couple of weeks.

My Chase Sapphire Preferred has gotten nicked probably 8 times by now, ugh, but I have to say the Chase algorithm is very good. They've caught the fraud most of the time before I did. Regardless it was a painless process to reverse the charges and get a new card.

we also drive for trips but since DD moved to San Francisco last year, flights are becoming part of our lives again. I prefer driving, and we just did a 4500 mile road trip~( probably got to TX before folks got thru TSA)but we are going to be doing both now

It was a tough choice between the 2 cards, but the companion pass tipped the pot. If I can fly my DS to visit his sister and vice versa, worth it. The SW card does give 2x's the points on some travel areas as well. maybe not as good as the Sapphire but helpful.

Thanks Alexle2007 for the clarification! That is even better. Do you guys know if you can gift bonus points from the 50,000 promo to another card holder? My DD *might* be thinking of taking advantage of her offer, but doesn't want to pay the annual fee. Maybe if I pay her fee, she would *gift* over miles and we could get CF pretty darn quick and she would be the companion, flying free for a year!

No, you cannot gift RR points and have them count toward that person's Companion Pass status.

ETA: I'm unsure if you understand how the companion pass works. Are you aware that the RR account owner must purchase a ticket and fly along with the companion? You would not be able to name your daughter in SF as your companion and fly her to visit her brother unless you're on the plane with her.

I understand it, we were hoping to travel together at times back and forth, or to have her brother do the same. I need to be clearer when posting.I meant she would be the one "entitled" to the companion perk. Thank you for the info on the gifting of points. That would have been TOO great, lol.

to Op the companion pass is great- just be REALLY sure to read up on how to get it/how it works before you try going for it.... the best way to save on travel expenses is to home in on HOW you want to save..... if it's flights, and SWA is good for you,and your setup, that's great.

Ive been a Chase SW card holder for a few years now and their fraud monitoring is too restrictive in my opinion. They'll deny a charge for the silliest thing. If it wasnt for the SW miles, I'd probably switch to a different bank card. A few times I stood in long lines at the checkout, got up to the cashier and then got my purchase denied because my purchase did not fit my shopping profile, or some something stupid like that. One time this happened on black friday and I was livid.
