Chase (Southwest Visa) rep just told me something questionable regarding 50,000 RR points....

I called to find out when the 50,000 would post to our account, as I spent well over the amount needed on January 13th. She said, "Well, since you opened the account on December 31, you will receive your bonus points 3 months later, on March 31st". Is she for real? I've not heard this anywhere.

doesn't sound right, unless they've changed their policy.

I've always gotten them on the next statement following once I had met the spend threshold.

Points will post about 3 days after your billing period closes. Watch your Southwest account for the points. If you only see the points for the charges, but not the bonus points, then they'll post next month.

Now I'm a little concerned about purchasing airlines tickets for our upcoming March trip. If I go ahead and book out of pocket now, can I change it to points after they credit them to my account? I'm feeling like the answer is probably no.

You can cancel and rebook, but you're at the mercy of price increases. Did you points from the purchase already hit your southwest account?

If you purchase them out of pocket and then cancel, you will get a "credit" not a refund to your credit card that you'll need to use within one year from the time of purchase. If you are buying more than one ticket, the credit will be in everyone's one name. So if I brought 3 tickets for $600. I would have 3 individual credits for $200 for DH, DS and myself and I can't use DS's credit towards my flight.

Yes, if you pay with cash and then cancel to re-book with points, you will only get back a 'credit' that must be used within 1 year.

I got a card in September. I hit the threshold in November but did not get the points until my December statement closed. I read that if you hit the threshold within a week of closing, you have to wait until the next closing.

it varies.... just wait and hold your breath.... that rep may or may not be correct- sometimes (usually) they post after the statement closes,if you've hit your spend at least a few days before it closes. This is one reason it's a good idea to try and get those points set up well ahead of when you need them ,average time from card opening to getting the points is about 3 mos.....

Got my card in November, met $2000 in Dec and points posted that billing cycle.

I noticed on my bill (first one) that the billing cycle closed on the 11th. The purchase I made was on the 13th. :( I noticed the sale that Southwest is having right now is ending 2/4. Ugh. Such a hard decision!

With AmEx I had to wait until the next billing cycle closed before I got mine. It felt like forever waiting to get my points.

They will be posted to your account after the billing period in which you met the $2k or $3k requirement..

Yes, I hate that about AmEx, and tell them so every time they send a survey. It is hard to check if I got the points I was expecting when I have to wait another month to get them!
