Charity Organization Driver stole a tub from my front porch!

I belong to area freecycle groups and had set out a tub with items that were meant for freecyclers to come and pick up.

Anyway, I get home yesterday around noon and my tub is gone! I sent off a few emails to the people who were to pick up items--none of them had been by yet--they were coming in the late afternoon..

Turns out the VFW truck was in our neighborhood yesterday. He pulled in my driveway, went to my porch and took my tub that was clearly marked FREECYCLE with a sheet of directions for those picking up! I had not called for a pickup at all!

Then--it gets better--he goes next door to my neighbor who had called for a pickup and takes not only the garbage bags clearly marked FOR VFW but the handmade wooden bench that her husband had made! It sets right by the garage. The bags were not on the bench or close to the bench. Our neighbor across the street saw the truck and the driver, so we know who did it. After he heard about the bench, he called us as well.

This is scary--to think that a charity organization will jut go into your driveway and take items off of your porch when you have not called them!

The good thing is we are both getting our stuff back and the manager is talking to the drivers about it. I told the woman who called to let us know that she should pass along to her manager that he needs to emphasize how serious this is--we were both going to file police reports for theft, call the area newspapers and tv stations. She was very quiet while I was telling her this as I am sure they don't need bad publicity! I am sending an email to everyone I know, though, to warn them about this!

So, if you have any charity organizations come to pick stuff up, mark it clearly. Set it at the end of the driveway--not anywhere close to your porch or a bench, etc!

Oh my that is bad! Luckily we don't have anything in our front yard, it wouldn't be there in the morning knowing the kids in the bad estate across the field, so I don't have that risk. The problem I have is with charity collectors not coming to pick up the bags we leave out so they sit by the front door getting soaked until we bring them back in.

That is awful.. I don't know how many times a charity organization like that has called...and stop by... We have freecycle here too..and I know alot of my friends leave the items out for ppl to pick up.. I will be emailing them about that too...
As for the bench.. UHM, almost makes you wonder what the driver was thinking... That is awful... :( I'm glad you will be getting your items back... thanks for the heads up...

Well that's just crappy. Do we have to nail our stuff down to the front porch so people can't take it?! UGH!

Dang! Guess he just thought it was a free for all!!!! Did you make him a STUPID Sign? :rotfl2:

Hey!! Hey!! I have offered to make magnet "Stupid" Signs for those individuals we run across that just need to be marked!!

WOW this is ballsy. In a neighborhood and everything he was asking to get caught. We have the problem of them never coming even after we set up a pickup so for them to take stuff that is not labelled is crazy.

Oh my, I just put 7 bags out for the Vietnam Veteran's on my stoop, but luckily there is nothing else they can go off with, but I will double check to be sure!

Wonder if that driver guy had to take the picture drivers test:drive: seems he can't read...

Thanks for the heads up. We have The Cancer Federation always calling for stuff...sometimes I put some out, but they are never here when I have my stuff ready. Somehow they always call right after I have taken a box to Good Will...sheesh...

This is ridiculous. Maybe you should tie your car down too.

UPDATE

We got our stuff back yesterday evening--our tub with the items still in it and the neighbor's bench. I have a feeling that the drivers will be getting a good, long talking to as my neighbor and I were not happy campers and have told a bunch of people about what has happened. :sunny:

We have a problem in the UK with a so-called "charity" taking bags for real charities. What happens is, these organisations put fliers through doors saying they are collecting for stuff to help less fortunate people in Eastern Europe - making it sound like a charity. In actual fact, they SELL the stuff over there. That is bad enough (some people don't mind the misrepresentation if it saves them taking it somewhere themselves, but I do). The worst thing is that they watch to see when other charities do the rounds with the special printed bags, then go round and pick up the donations before the charity van comes round.

Still, a friend went for an interview with a charity shop the other day and was told he'd be given latex gloves for going through the donations (eeeewwwww!) and that out of 25 bags of stuff each day there's often only a dozen items saleable. How sickening is that? We get rubbish collections weekly and there's recycling centres everywhere, but some people would rather dump stuff for the charity to get rid of.
