I know there are characters at these parks that are related to Universal. Will they sign autographs and let you take pictures like at Disney? Also is it worth it to bring a autograph book???

Yes to autographs and pictures
They sell several autorgraph books in the parks too.
The ones I can think of are a general US/IOA one, Sponge Bob and spiderman.

Yeah most of the Marvel characters (X-men, spiderman) and such do autographs I do believe. I'm not sure if theres any in Suess Landings or not, and I'm pretty sure there are some in Toon Lagoon.

most definitely......

in fact, they won't leave you until you start to walk away.....

the great thing i like about the characters at universal is that they all talk to you....

you will find a lot of characters at the studio side.

in the past we have gotten
popeye
oilve oyl
Bluto
Xmen(cyclops, wolverene, storm and a couple i don't know the name of)
Spiderman
Spongebob
Cat in the Hat
The Grinch
Thing 1 and Thing 2
Sam (sam i am)
Guy (from Green eggs and ham)
Shrek
Princess Fiona (human version)
Donkey
Shaggy and Scooby
Curious George with Man in the yellow hat,

we found that was no queing for pictures and autographs for most characters. Its not a free for all, they just don't seem as busy.... you can walk up to them without waiting. I think the Shrek characters and the Cat in the Hat ones were the only ones we had to queue for; and that was minimal.

I hadn't realised about the characters before either and we were in IOA with our (then) 5yr old DS (who's 9 today - where does the time go!) and we heard some cars or music or something and turned round only to find the X-Men characters all there - luckily our Disney autograph book was still in the rucksack so they signed that (with a few comments about signing a Disney book I must add!!) - then Spiderman came out and he was in heaven!!

I've learnt now to keep an autograph book in the rucksack "just in case" as you never know what's gonna happen!!

also saw woody woodpecker and his girlfriend Winnie (i think thats her name, but i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong)

:thumbsup2

Thank you all for replying back. I have been really busy at work lately and I haven't had chance to check on the disboard for a few weeks. I was getting the impression that there wasn't much character interaction like WDW, but I'am glad to hear that I was mistaken. My kids are getting excited everyday as the time clicks closer. Thank you again everyone.

This totally freaked DS3 out! We were coming from 7 days at WDW where masked characters don't talk. Then Spiderman crawls up and says "How ya doin, buddy?" Poor DS flattened himself against the wall and yelled "YOU CAN TALK?" :rotfl:

We were just there 2 weeks ago, and this is who we saw

Xmen I have no idea which ones, but DS12 knew
Spiderman
Spongebob (no autographs?)
Cat in the Hat
The Grinch
Thing 1 and Thing 2
Guy (from Green eggs and ham)
Shaggy and Scooby
Curious George with Man in the yellow hat
Woody Woodpecker and his girlfriend
Dora (just a stamp)
Jimmy Neutron (Just a stamp)
Captain America
Madagascar Lion and penguins (no autographs)
Bart & Lisa Simpson (we saw Homer and Marge later but the line was long and DS3 had to go potty)

There lines for the characters were usually very short. In US if you head over toward the ET ride, there is a little show with Scooby, Shaggy, Curious George, Man with the Yellow Hat, Woody and his girlfriend. After the show, they line up and sign autographs for awhile.

Some characters (like Shrek and Donkey) had a photographer nearby, while others did not (Madagascar, etc.) However, you have to view the pictures there (or before you leave the park).

Does anyone know if Universal characters have their own photographers as they do at Disney?

Sponge bob does in the interactive area at the end of the Jimmy Nuetron ride.
Shrek, doney and/or Fiona at the area across from the exit for Shrek.

Thats all I can think of

Character interaction is totally different than at Disney. The most we waited for any character was 5 minutes. There were so many with so few lines, my kids didn't even want to take pictures with them anymore! A few highlights...

We went to Islands this past Sunday and Homer and Bart were there. There were very few families there (maybe 8 at most), and it was our first night, so I forgot my camera, otherwise I could've taken 50 pictures. After making several rounds with all the families, Bart started teasing Homer and they started chasing each other around the restaurant. Before going to Islands, call ahead to see if characters will be there. It's been so dead there lately, they've cancelled a lot of the character dinners.

We also saw SpongeBob at the Jimmy Neutron ride. Again, not more than 4 families in the queue, but the photographer was having trouble with her camera. SpongeBob was getting impatient and started tapping his foot and making all these gestures. Finally he started playing soccer with the girl he was suppoed to be taking a picture with until the camera was fixed.

Jimmy Neutron and Dora the Explorer at the entrance of Universal. Like I said, so many characters with no people who were interested in seeing them! Poor Jimmy was getting lonely and grabbed a girl and started dancing with her.

If your kids like characters they will have a blast at Universal. Some of these characters will starting to look desperate for attention. :)
