Been doing a lot of pricing up for flights for October abd have found some good bargains with US Airways and United Airlines both of which have filed under this voluntary receivership thingy - which I don't really understand.

How much risk is there booking with these airlines under these circumstances ?

I've noticed that the 'Airline Failure Insurance' is not an option for them - is that because they've already 'failed' or because they're more likely to fold ?

Any political/economics experts out there ?

We're flying with United later this year - we booked before they filed for this. As far as I know it's just a case of business as usual. Someone did try to explain it to me - and with me about to finsih a degree in Economics and Politics I should be abel to explain it.......I think it is more or less a precautionary thing by them, letting everyone know they are having abit of trouble, but hope to get it sorted out........
The United Airlines website has some info -United Airlines

I'm not overly concerned about it - we're booked through United Vacations, so if anything happens they'll transfer us to another airline I presume.

I'm more worried about Messrs Bush, Blair and Hussein......

airline failure insurance cannot be applied to any airline who is already in Chapter 11... this does not necessarily mean they will go bust... take Continental 10 years ago they went into Chapter 11 ..and then came out of it no proble,. this is like a financial holding bay to allow them some time and breathing space to get their finances in order.. for anyone booking flights with any airline not currently in Chapter 11 status they should look for this protection also along a similar line, they should ensure that the operator they use IS ABTA/ATOL bonded... there have been a few high profile failures in recent times and if they are not bonded you may find yourself up a creek........ without a holiday!!!
Such a cheerful person ain't I!!!!!!!

We are flying with United in May, there should be no problems at all.
