Bobbi - That's wonderful! I didn't know about this! You must been so relieved!

My DS is in the same situation without a job and has been looking forever......

Good luck, best wishes to him. It is a hard place, to be unemployed and want to work. I'm on the retirement side of life, and I was so disappointed not to have had a schedule for the spring. When my DUnc passed and some other things happened, it turned out to be good that I didn't have to cancel classes, so it worked. I've sent a note to my dept. chair asking to have a fall schedule. I hope it turns out. This would most likely be my last teaching job.

Teaching what level Bobbi and what specifically?

DS was downsized from his first job ever after college and luckily saved tons of $ and is still living on that plus odd jobs he gets doing programming for friends. Thanks for the good wishes and the best to your DS. I hope it works out!

You probably remember that I taught 22 years and worked in educ for a total of 36 years, retired 1 year and now work for a govt contractor that administers a national test (NAEP). The pay is low but it covers what our retirement doesn't ;) and let's us travel a little until we sell our house and move somewhere cheaper.

Battle!

Thanks, everyone! I've taught p/t in different colleges for 40 years, and full time in public schools for 16 years, but the public schools years weren't consecutive, so nothing as far as retirement benefits from them! I teach math. For 18 years I've taught p/t in a branch of University of Cincinniti, Blue Ash.

Kathy, you have a good plan! Do you have ideas about where you would like to settle? We are considering Tennessee, the Pigeon forge, Sieverville area. We will keep the NJ home that we share with DSis, at least as long as our mom is alive in NJ.

 Retirement and enough money to live on seems to be front and centre in our minds at the moment.

Yes. Staying healthy enough to get out and about is one thing. Having enough money to do the things you want to do whilst out and about is another.

So I'm curious. Do you know what the US financial advisers are advocating that you need to have for retirement?
The Australian advisers say that you need to have a minimum of about $750K nest egg for a couple if you want an annual income of $40-$50K. You need about $1Million if you want an income of about $60 - $70K. This is in addition to the home.

I will have to do some research. I listen & do help and know what we have, but I do not know what is recommended. We do spend more than average on travel, vacations with family. I will need to trim some expenses.

I'm only curious because most Australians will never get to the $750K in savings mark.
