Cellular at Sea question

spoke to a Verizon rep. They informed me that with the Cellular at Sea plan I don't need to put my phone in airplane mode. This doesn't make sense to me. I will get roaming charges correct? Anyone with knowledge on this? TIA

I think the problem with that advice would be apps that update in the background that might go through your .5 gb faster than planned? I’d be tempted to only turn off airplane mode a couple times a day when I am actively surfing. But yes, to use CELLULAR, you need to turn Apple mode off. Will you be needing to make/receive calls? Is it for emergencies? Do you have mostly sea days?

Your phone won't connect to Cellular at Sea if it is in Air Plane Mode. Technically, you won't have roaming charges, but Cellular at Sea will charge you for any usage you have.

You may need to turn data off (there is a function to automatically do this while roaming) - but as others have said, no do not turn on airplane mode. Note that even with data off, you will receive notifications from most social media apps you are using, but this will not really "use" data. Now, the challenge is if you need the DCL app for onboard texting and other things... it can act up when not in airplane mode.
