WOW! I had all but given up on SK. His books were not the same (imo). Well, he has redeemed himself in a big way with Cell. the old SK is back. I find my heart beating a mile a minute, I can't wait to turn the page.

I want to know if raggedy man is helping them, or setting them up! I am so scared for them, because I DON'T KNOW!

I am not going to get any housework done today, because that book is calling me.

I was always a huge SK fan, but not of his post-accident books. I thought this one was just ok too. I am glad you are enjoying it though!

Hmmm... well, I read Cell not too long ago and I was totally not impressed by it. I thought it was weak. I'm not going to give away the ending, but I will say this about it in a whisper:

I felt like he didn't even think the ending through, but just got to a certain point and gave up on the story.

When you finish the book, come back and tell me if you agree with that.

(if anybody quotes me, delete what I wrote so it doesn't accidentally show up :))

I read it and thought it was pretty good. Not his best, but not his worst either. Some of his books I absolutely love and have a hard time putting down, others I don't even finish. Like his new one "Lisey's Story", I'm about a third of the way through it and put it down and picked up something else. Don't know if I'll finish it or not, I wasn't enjoying reading it at all.

I just picked this up yesterday. I haven't read an SK novel in ages. I used to get every book of his as soon as it came out, but then I lost interest somewhere along the way.

Yes, I read Cell. I enjoyed it most of the way through and thought that we might have gotten the "old" Stephen King back. But the ending REALLY disappointed me.

I liked it, but then I have a bias. I hate the cell phone culture, so the idea of people who are constantly on their cell phones getting turned into zombies kind of resonated with me! ;)

Mushy, I totally agree with you on the ending.

I loved this book right up until that point. Riveting story for most of the book, though.

Yes, I read this a couple of months ago. Not my favorite SK work, but pretty good. I wanted my DH to read it so we can discuss it :) He bought the book to read, and I snatched it up.

about the ending (For Mushy and other people that read the whole thing:

spoiler:
It ended so suddenly, I had to read it a couple of times to "get" it. Did Clay get affected by the pulse when he dialed the phone, ("he didn't allow himself time to think") or was he just talking baby talk to Johnny like they used to with phone calls?
...

I consider Cell to be middle of the road King. Not his best, not his worst. I think the story ended where it should have began, and that it was written kind of like a poor man's The Stand. One good thing is that the story starts right away and gets you interested, unlike Lisey's story which literally takes about 150 pages to get into. The biggest issue I had with Cell was probably how certain ideas and solutions just came to the characters, and the assumptions were right, based on practically nothing. But King has relied on deus ex machina in too many of his recent books.

I was confused on that point too. I'm curious to see what they end up doing in the movie because people tend to like "happy endings" & tying up loose ends. All I did was walk away from the book feeling frustrated & I don't like that!

I agree with all the other posters. I did finish the book and thought it was okay but what is with the ending.....

My take on the ending (and it's been a while since I read it so I hope this is right) is: (highlight)

I didn't think Clay was ever affected by the pulse, but I wasn't so sure his son would ever recover.

I agree it wasn't his worst, but really far from his best. There's not much recent SK I like (although I did like Lisey's Story and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon). I think I'm going to try something his son, Joe Hill, wrote(Heart-Shaped Box).

RE: The Ending (spoilers in white) --

It was left open-ended as to whether Clay saved his son or not. However, King has said in interviews that in his mind he did save him, and I do think that makes sense since all the other things the group did/figured out pretty much worked for them. It indirectly showed us that this too will work.

I would have preferred the dark ending that he did not as it would have been a better throwback to old King.

I had given up on him too, but now I'm reading Lisey's Story...just started it.

The thing about the book was that I know all the places he talks about in th b/c I live very close to most of it in Mass but I had a hard time keeping myself interested. It took way too long to build for my taste. I usually read SK b/c most of his stuff takes place in locations with which I am very familiar and even in my own town. I LOVED Salem's Lot and to my surprise when I was taking my son to U Mass Amherst we went by a very small town New Salem and it occured to me that this could have been the model for Salem's lot.
That is what I find fun in SK's work.

Mushy, I totally agree with you on the ending.

ditto! my hubbie lol when i got to the end and muttered expletives, i was not happy :rotfl:

I finished the book about 2 weeks ago. Now I have to admit, it's the first Stephen King book I've ever read, so I LOVED it! I couldn't put it down! I just thought it ended abruptly.

It's been a while since I read it. I guess I'll be the oddball: I thought the ending was OK. I am anxious to see the movie.
