It's easy to blame the tabloids but mainstream sites like MSNBC and Fox cover celebrity news too. I guess it's a chicken and egg thing...what begat what?
Practically speaking, I doubt that millions of people are going to be persuaded to stop being interested in celebrities.
I agree also that it just isn't the tabloids and the major networks are guilty of this as well. When that train wreck Anna Nichole Smith died last January, I couldn't get any regular to news to save my life. Every channel was abuzz about her death and it was ridiculous, IMO. Even the O'Reilly factor covered non stop. The ironic thing was that he makes a point of ragging on celebrities and the celebrity culture in his books, yet there he was covering this. He started off by saying "unfortunately this is news and we have to cover it", blah, blah. I was like, no you don't and I took him off my Tivo schedule. I just wish more Americans would lose their appetite for the celebrity obsessed culture we have running rampant in this country. Good luck with that though.
