I called DVC today to enquire about adding on.....

They told me that due to new policies, they REQUIRED my SIN (Social Insurance Number), in order to sell me a contract. Obviously, I refused (as I give my SIN number to no one).

Has anyone else run into this with DVC recently? We were not financing the purchase, it was 100% cash.

Most timeshares will require this. It's for their protection for payment of the maintenance fees.

I have given my SIN both times to complete the documents.
Once for a cash contract the next for a partial cash and partial finance.

Last Jan. when we added on points at VWL we were asked for my sin and I phoned Jaki/**** and told them that I refused to give it to them . They said a photo of my drivers licence was good enough. I just got documents for a BCV purchase on Friday and again it asked for my SIN. Hopefully the rules have not changed. I am going to email them right now.

This doesn't really answer your question but here in Canada your SIN is not a form of ID and should never be given to anyone for that purpose. Also, your health card is the same. No one can legally ask your for it as ID.

8 years ago when we first joined, we were required to give it to them. We didn't really question it since our guide mentioned that it was required for purchase of property. I suppose at the time I assumed that it was required to be on file if we decide to sell it.

By the way, we didn't finance, as well.

It was never an issue. But I think I will call them and double check.

this is correct. you are required to give it and they also use the last 4 digits for security when you call in before they will speak with you once you are a member... granted yesterday I was thrown for a loop and ready to give the last 4 numbers when suddenly I was asked for address/phone number and I stumbled not expecting that :lmao: I had to think for a moment 'what's my address' hahaha

I haven't ever given my SIN # to member services (7 years now,) I always tell them I am Canadian and they then ask for and I provide my full address and phone number instead.

Pj

I just faxed a copy of my drivers licence . That is all that is required. But I purchased through a resale and they told me that a SIN is not required for them. I can not see Disney being different.

We have been members since 2004 and have never given our SIN.

When speaking with Member Services they always ask for address etc as identification. I think once over the years they asked for whatever the American equivalent is (escapes my memory right now), but there must be a screen prompt for address as it only happened once.

Do not give your SIN number to companies in the US as identification as they will assume it is the same as Social Security Number used in the US which is also 9 digits. This can lead to a false match to a person in the US with the same number issued by Social Security Number.

This is required by Revenue Canada now.

If you own any sort of property , vacation homes..etc..they want to know it.

-You have to claim it on your income tax, under the foreign property section. And they want to make sure you are claiming it.

-If you declare bankruptcy, forfit one anything at any point they want to know what foreign property you own...so the government can seize it! They want to know All your assets...

Alot of people make money off their foreign vacation rentals..Rev. Canada want to be aware of this as well!

Though, DVD doesn't report their info to Revenue Canada, so why do they need it?

Also, you only have to report foreign assets on your income tax return, if they are worth more the $100,000.

True, if you declare bankruptcy you'd have to declare your DVC property as an asset. But, no more than any other asset.

Thanks to all that responded. I can't find one reason why DVD needs my SIN #. But a whole buch of reasons why they shoudln't.

When we originally bought in (3 years ago), they told us they wanted our SIN # for ID purposes (if we can Member Services and don't have our membership number, they'd use the SIN # as ID - just like what they do with USA Social Security #'s). We declined then, and they said OK.

Agreed it's only property valued at $100k or more. We have been members for 5 years and have never given our SIN.

We gave ours when we signed up last May. They have it on file and do ask about 50% of the time for the last 4 when I call them up.
