It's a good thing that one is covered by all the vaccines.

I honestly think many states will see one last short lived surge and then that will be the end of it. It seems to be making its way through the country in an erratic wave, but the states that previously surged are all WAY down in cases and hospitalizations.

The states surging now just hadn't previously seen a big surge (recently).

To go along with this is that this week is the last week for Spring Break thru out the country. It will be interesting to see if the Surges reported in some states stabilize or even decrease now that everyone is back to their "normal" routines.

It’s Florida, you should be more surprised to see anyone outdoors with a mask! It’s Ybor though, so they’re likely tourists.

They might be but I've heard from enough people in FL to know the residents there aren't wearing masks too in some places or they didn't have a mask requirement at all. I think that's the case elsewhere too, touristy places or not where residents aren't always wearing a mask. I just had to sorta laugh at myself that the first thought I had was looking at people not wearing a mask instead of the tent talking about vaccines. Talk about strange times!

To go along with this is that this week is the last week for Spring Break thru out the country. It will be interesting to see if the Surges reported in some states stabilize or even decrease now that everyone is back to their "normal" routines.

I think that might have been more easily explained in the past by looking at holidays and such but maybe not so much now. FL is the only state that would make more sense to experience surges due to spring break but the northeast and michigan are ones that unless they were identified as out of state travel seems like something else may be going on. I think the thought that it just is making its way through the populations of these states that may have experienced surges long ago, which is especially the case with the northeast who was hit way early on, seems more like it. While the rest of the country is in the last 2 months getting out of their previous surges.

That's not true for all of Florida. Residents in South Florida are very much mask compliant. Tourists in Miami are a different story. FWIW, the drive-up vaccination site we went to in South Florida had signs posted throughout the park stating masks must be worn at all times.

Yeah, it seems like I'm hearing about more people around my age getting very sick or dying this time around. Before this month, the youngest person I personally knew (even in a friend-of-a-friend sense) who died of covid was in her mid-70s. This month so far, I've heard about three women around my age (late 30s to mid 40s) dying. That's alarming, this far into this thing and with vaccination so close. One of those that died had already had one dose, and one was scheduled to get it but had to cancel when she tested positive.

The good news here- at least according to Gottleib- is that most of the new cases are younger people. Not to say, of course, older/higher risk people aren't still getting sick.

That is incredibly sad and disheartening. I thought vaccines rolling out would make me feel more optimistic, but the situation in Michigan and seeing cases start to go back up in my state too is really putting a damper. And then I’m seeing the P1 variant taking hold in Canada.

No, that is explained by the increased severity of this strain.

Yes it does.
If the variants spread more easily and make you more sick then it makes sense that the next high risk age group that isn't vaccinated would be seeing more hospitalizations/severe sickness/death with the variants.

I think it's the new b117 variant. It spreads quicker than the original strain and is more severe from what I have read. Apparently the vaccine protects against it, so the older vaccinated folks are not getting it, the unvaccinated are, which is the younger people. That's my guess anyway.
