What do you think is safer- walking around maskless but vaccinated or unvaccinated with a mask?

That assumes vaccines will be 100% effective at preventing an individual from being infected and having symptoms, as well as not transmitting it. We don’t even need trials to tell you that is 100% not the case.

So when will you stop masking? What’s your criteria?

Absolutely huge to keep this stuff in mind. For what it’s worth, Pfizer and Moderna have both said their vaccines could be modified for mutations within weeks.

I read that. Also, I don't think the word Covid is going anywhere in our vocabulary. This might be a vaccine that we get yearly, like the flu.

I fully expect that. It will turn into cold, flu and covid season and will eventually just be the norm.

Agree, I think that's where we're likely headed. But that doesn't take away from the seriousness of our current situation. Until we reach herd immunity and get out of this stage where we have a raging pandemic and skyrocketing hospitalizations, everyone needs to be vigilant.

I didn't say it did.

Do we really need to repeat it in every post?

Seeing the efficacy of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, I now believe Covid-19 can be eradicated and not just dealt with.

And yes- I know I’m the guy everyone hates because I just say stuff like I’m Dr. Science. The above comes from Scott Gottleib not me.

Given that polio is still around, it's going to take years to eradicate COVID-19.

Well, I’ll nominate this for the worst take that’s been posted here yet. Polio is EXTREMELY RARE and 100% preventable by vaccine. It is, in fact, evidence that we can effectively eradicate Covid 19.

The last virus we eradicated was small pox. Even with requirements for vaccinations for measles, it's still around.

“still around” translates to literally a few cases a year. And almost entirely limited to vaccine deniers.

That's not the case in other parts of the world where measles can run rampant. Measles still kills a lot of people. One of the things that DH and I needed to get if we'd ever gotten the vaccines to go on a trip to South Africa was a MMR titer, to see if we still had protection for the measles. There are outbreaks there from time to time. If we get enough anti-vaxxers in this country, which seems to be the way we're heading with widespread belief in insane conspiracy theories of all kinds....we'll eventually see more small outbreaks here as well. We've been on the verge in recent years of losing our "elimination status" with respect to the measles. Hopefully it won't continue in that direction.

And it’s entirely self-inflicted.

A lot of people say the exact same things in these threads. It's been happening for 8 months now.
I think the person was saying that because their comment didn't seem to warrant a reminder of the seriousness of the situation. They were only saying that COVID might just become this thing we deal with habitually like we do other viruses.
