CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

There is nothing wrong doing some of the non-medical things letting setting up for manufacture or distribution in parallel. However, some things about the length of normal trials for phase 3 can't be compressed. If it normally takes 6-9-12 months to test a large enough volunteer population for LONG TERM side effects, not sure how you can safely shorten that. No one has yet come up with a treatment or cure for covid, but somehow those working to develop a vaccine has all stumbled on the right formula on their first try?

It's much easier to make a vaccine than find an effective treatment. The immune system response is fairly well understood and works the same in most people, so there isn't as much trial and error involved.

Most of the vaccines in trial SOMEHOW target the virus' spike proteins. This is a vulnerable characteristic of this virus, which ends up being fairly easy to teach the body how to attack.

Plus, the groundwork for the mechanism of the vaccine was laid 10 years ago when they were working on developing a vaccine for SARS, another coronavirus. So, all they had to do was refine it to target this virus specifically. The virus genome was sequenced and shared by scientists very early in the pandemic, so they had everything they needed to develop a vaccine.

I'm not doubting that it will take longer than people think, but isn't Project Warp Speed about producing the vaccine candidates concurrent with the testing so it's ready to go if approved?

And that still puts us on the timeline to have vaccines available by next summer, not this year for the broad public. It might come sooner for healthcare workers and those most at risk.

Are you asking if they are making 100's of millions of doses of each of the vaccine candidates to be ready in case they determine one of them is safe and effective? Definitely not going to happen. That would simply be too much money and resources invested.

I do think they're getting supply chains ready - everything from transport to storage to the 100's of millions of syringes and needles needed. That said, my medical practice can't even get gloves or disinfectants right now, so we'll see how it actually turns out.

they are absolutely making hundreds of millions of doses pre-approval. Moderna, Pfizer, AZ, and JnJ are all doing so in fact.

I have to say this operation is going very smoothly. If "Warp speed" turns out to be a major success it will be quite a feather in the cap of this administration.

it will be a feather in the cap of the scientists who are actually making said vaccines. Lets not forget who are the true heroes working very hard on this project. And it is not only the US.

It is truly amazing to me how many people are afraid of a vaccine. It’s rushed because the world has literally dumped all of its resources into it. Things tend to move quicker when you give something more funding and more people.

Yes, some people will have some complications. Some people have complications from everything. If my choices are the vaccine or COVID then I’ll take my chances with the vaccine.

I’m not waiting 3 years but if some of you want to sit at home until 2024 then go for it. I’ll be on the beach.

Was told the other day that I am probably not a candidate even though high risk because the data is more focused on some groups than others. Normally, I am the first group to be vaccinated so this is a new approach.

Just going to say I hope people will pay attention to who can safely have it versus who is excluded and if excluded please trust the scientists and do not attempt to push through for yourselves or family members. The Dr's are strategizing, let them do their thing.

Enjoy your trip.

I’m not afraid of the vaccine but I am concerned of any potential long term effects of a brand new rushed vaccine is. Those long term effects will be unknown. I will say that a local doctor that I trust and whose views on how we should be handling this virus aline with mine said he will get any vaccine that is approved because he trusts that it won’t be approved if it isn’t not safe.

Me too. I just hope people understand the dynamic will likely change once a vaccine becomes available. They will no longer be able to expect others to stay home to protect them. The onus will be on them at that point to stay home if that's their preference. Unfortunately for them, I think many workplaces will be less understanding of people staying home, and it will be interesting to see how many of those workplaces require a vaccine to return. And how many schools.

I think it will take six months to a year once the vaccine is available to get enough immunized to be able relax restrictions back to “normal.” It won’t happen overnight. Those who are more cautious with this virus are not trusting others to protect them. I am staying home now to protect myself and will continue you to do so for the foreseeable future. I’m okay with it. I will eventually get the vaccine but I won’t be one of the first in line.

No, it won't be like flipping a light switch. But after the extended period we've had of economic limitations, I expect it to move pretty swiftly.

I had to laugh on Friday when I heard another estimate of when the vaccine would be available enough to allow a return to semi-normal living... in 12 to 18 months.

You're assuming that those of us who plan to delay getting the vaccine are all going to hunker down at home until we get it. I'm not sitting home now. I'm avoiding higher-risk settings, but I've been on the beach and trails half the summer and will be there again next week. The fact that I and the rest of my household are lower-risk for the virus is a big part of why I feel I can delay the decision to get vaccinated, and that will be even more true once vaccination of higher-risk people begins, because right now I'm avoiding certain things that I'd be comfortable with for myself (like church and most indoor dining) out of concern that I could contract the virus and unknowingly pass it to her.

I think 'normal' living means concerts, full sports arenas, etc. It will be a long time before I will do those again.

I'm not afraid of a vaccine, but I do not trust politicians to tell me it is safe. It will have to be thoroughly researched an analyzed by people who have some real expertise.

I will take the vaccine when multiple people have had it (aside from the people who are in the trial) and haven't had any kind of bad reaction to it. I'm not opposed to the vaccine but I am wary about how quickly it's being done. I also wonder if there is going to be a huge shortage of it like the h1n1 vaccine shortage.
