Except in certain areas, Disney hasn't really made their property walkable. Which is kind of a bummer, but I get it. I'm glad you asked here before you arrived and tried dodging in and out of traffic!

We are trying to decide between Doubletree Disney Springs (save 800) or SSR (which we have stayed at before as you can see) to be near DS. Do you have thoughts on this as you are a DIS Veteran as well? Thanks!

I honestly haven't stayed at any of the DS areas good neighbor hotels, so I can't comment on that. We have enjoyed SSR and if it's within the budget, I'd choose there. They are working on a refurbishment and many of the rooms there are brand new, which is nice. Good luck with your choice!
I haven't stayed at that particular DoubleTree, but I would think it would be like most other DoubleTree's, which I find to be perfectly acceptable hotels. One big thing to consider is transportation to and from the parks. At SSR you will get the Disney transportation. At the DoubleTree you will get the transportation that area offers, which I don't think is quite as frequent as Disney's transportation to the parks. If you will be driving and planning on using that vehicle to get to the parks, then this becomes a non-issue and I would go with the DoubleTree. Something else to consider: the DoubleTree possibly has a free breakfast, which you would not get at SSR. So there could be some additional savings there.
Edit: It looks like this DoubleTree does not offer free breakfasts.
We have decided to stay at SSR as we have before. We did the walk from SSR to OKW for early dinner once but we know it is not lit at night. I didn't think there was truth to the CBR to DS path, but wanted to check. CBR is on my list as a place to stay but it was more expensive than renting points at SSR and we love the easy access to DS.
