While we're in CA, we were considering a visit out to Catalina Island. Do any of you have an opinion as to which side of the island is better to visit. Two Harbors or Avalon?

I recommend Avalon. Unless the island has changed quite a bit in the past 8 years, Two Harbors is a lot more rustic, while Avalon has the tours, restaurants, etc., to enjoy.

Yep - Avalon is the "town area" and Two Harbors is the "camping area." If you are just doing a day trip, Avalon is a better choice. Lots of little shops, restaurants, beach & beach activities. If you want to see the interior of Catalina, there should be a tour from Avalon. A helpful hint - if you are prone to motion sickeness, I suggest taking something before your boat ride. It always gets me.

Twin Harbors is not much for tourists and Avalon has all the sightseeing tours, places to eat and hotels. Beautiful. I was just there a couple months ago BUT at the Boy Scout Camp called Emerald Bay.

Enjoy your trip to Avalon if you decide to go. The boat ride is quick and smooth and even faster service there is the helicopter.

How frare is Catalina Island from DL?

First you have to get Long beach or San Pedro about 20 miles and then from there hop a boat for the 20+mile boat ride..
