Bandit was awalys a quiet cat. we thought she had been born without vocal capibilities since we hadnt heard her speak EVER! Last year she let out this little mew that we were STUNNED came from her. After that she would meow here and there if she wanted somthing (mabey twice a month). Today she meowed for water (i cleaned the bowl), meowed at my foot, meowed twice by the door. So whats up? should I be worried? is it bad when a cat becomes vocal? Shes 6 years old (and never spoke till 5). She was a stray that we got around a year old.

Today she meowed for water (i cleaned the bowl)

She's finally learned that meowing can get her things. :thumbsup2

It's the beginning for her and the end of any peace & quiet for you & the family. :headache:

Wait till you get the, "PUH-LEASE, feed me. I'm so hungry. The other family member forgot to feed me and I'm about to faint! :(" mew.

they have a unlimited (and awalys full) food bowl. I was just worried since she started so quiet.

Is it possible that something in your cats routine has changed? Maybe she is trying to tell you something else than she wants more food / water? The reason I ask this is that I have a (not so) similar situation... One of our cats barely meowed a peep for the first few years we had him. Just this past spring we found out he has diabetes. We've had to change his food, cut back on his food amount, stop giving him treats, etc., and now he has turned into a chatty cat. Please don't think I'm saying your kitty is sick or anything, I'm just wondering if something has changed where maybe she wants to be noticed more or something? :goodvibes

Our two boys (brothers) are about 2.5 years old and neither of them have made much of an effort to "talk." They chirp occasionally, but if I get a "mew?" out of them (most of the time it does sound like a question), I'm always surprised. I'm hoping they find their voices some day!

I'm not really sure. One of my cats, Bambi, used to be quiet. Now she screams every time we walk in the room. We give her food, water, and pets, but that's never enough for her.

awww ... she found her voice!

We've got a kitty that never made a peep when he was little. Sometimes he'd open his mouth like he was meowing but no sound came out! (sad!)

Then around when he turned a year old, he started making lots of noise!! Often times he doesn't talk, but sometimes he goes crazy meowing and carrying on. He loves to talk to us now!

We do sort of think that he figured out -- all of a sudden -- that meowing "got him stuff", like pets and love and treats. Maybe that is what has happened to your kitty? She tried it a couple times and got attention and things finally "clicked" and she realized that she could get tons of loving by "talking" t0o you?

My 11 year old cat "meeps" and doesn't talk much, but every single day when you walk in the house after work, she meeps to say "Great, you're home, now feed me!" I don't think I heard her talk much her first few years, she's definitely more chatty now, but it's always to get something.

That may be because the first time she meowd at me I scooped her up and loved on her for about a hour. She still opens her mouth like shes meowing but nothing comes out.... I love her.
