Cat. 9 to 6 or 7?

I've seen several people write about getting upgraded from a cat. 11 inside to a cat. 9 ov. Just wondering if anyone has received a cat. 6 or 7 verandah upgrade after getting a cabin assignment in cat. 9?

Also, will they give you an upgrade at check-in even if you have been assigned a particular cabin?

Although I suppose this could happen, it's probably not as likely. Upgrades usually result from the over-booking of a category. Category 11 is the most heavily discounted (even more so than cat. 12 in most cases), so they will over-book it in order to fill in the holes caused by cancellation. I have heard of people being upgraded from 11 to 6, sometimes even to category 4.

However, my advice is always to book the category in which you will feel comfortable, since that is most likely what you will end up getting. Booking a certain category and counting on an upgrade is really just setting yourself up to be disappointed.

As to upgrades at the port, you can check for availability and pay for one, but like other free upgrades, they are very rare. Probably even more so at the port since the cancellation period has ended and those who cancel at that point would have to pay for the entire trip.

Lloyd,

I'm confused about upgrading at the port as well. Lets say I'm confirmed in a cat 8, but there are plenty of 7, 6 and 5's available on sailing day. Do they offer a discounted rate to upgrade at the port, or is it the full difference between the cat booked and the upgraded cat?

Does that make sense?

Last Oct. my parents upgraded at the port from a 9 to a 6 for a total of $350. They checked in first and then went to the desk where you could do this (ask your CM which one it is) and there was plenty of availability. They even said no and then about 45 min. later decided to do it and it was still available. It absolutely made the cruise for them. I'm not sure how much they would have enjoyed it without a verandah - it was their first cruise ever.

We, on the other hand, had connecting 10's and could have upgraded to connecting 6's but it was $800 per cabin or $1600. No thanks. (we had 2 adults, 5 kids). We have no problem in inside staterooms so it wasn't a big deal for us.

preb,

My understanding is that you would have to pay the difference in category cost. I don't think it is discounted, or if it is, not by much.

So it is that much more expensive to go from a 10 to a 6 then a 9 to a 6? And the price difference from a t 10 to a 9 isn't that much. OUCH

Mjasp, I was surprised as well. I even asked why is was so much more - she just looked at me and shrugged. I was told this on two separate occasions (when we first inquired and when my parents actually upgraded later). I still don't know why.
