Is this really true?! I just read this in UG. Disney will let an 11yo run and not give them a medal at the end?? Seems ridiculous. Why allow them to run at all if this is true?

Watching them hand out the medals at the end I find this hard to believe. I just ran it twice a couple of weeks ago and both times the CM just handed them out to us as we crossed the line, they definitely were not inspecting closely who went across, nor did I see a set of special numbers to differentiate the younger runners, should not be an issue.

Any one under 12 (if that is what the navigator says, I have seen it as low as 10 but that was before runDisney took over as the "sponsor") will not be able to officially sign up. Thus no bib = no medal. It is an insurance and liability thing. Every time I have done it they have told parents their children can not participate but basically they can't stop your kids from running with you as the area the course goes is all accessible by guests of any age. So yes a younger runner could be out there with their family but not be an official participant.

What I read said 12 and over to get a bib and medal, but nothing to stop younger kids from running. Seems really odd to me...

I thought that it was 10 to get the bib on the last trip, not sure if it is on the Navigators or not but I did post the navigators from my recent B2B cruise on this forum if anyone wants to check.

From UG: "Can my kid join me? Sort of. Disney officially restricts participants to folks age 12 and older, so your child won’t get a bib or medal. Because of the informal setup of the race, though, there’s no way to stop kids under 12 from running along with you. Parents are given time during the walk to the race start to drop off kids at Scuttle’s Cove."

I've never heard of an age limit on a 5K -- our kids have participated in many as young as 7yo. This is really odd to me. We would have done this as a family (with our 9 and 11 year olds) but will certainly skip if the kids don't get medals!

And how does it protect them legally if they make no effort to stop kids from running?? All very odd to me.

Try to register your child. If they get registered and handed a big then they'll get a medal. If they won't allow your child to register and don't give him/her a bib then you know there will be no medal for them. Take that as the chance at a heads-up to avoid any disappointment at the end of the run.

The odd thing about the change is that runDisney's 5K policy is 5 and older. I think the big thing though is the sheer number of runners they get. When they allowed 10+ it was only getting 20 to 30 runners tops. Last time I did the race there were easily over a 100 runners.

Thanks all!! I guess we might give it a shot and see what they say. I'm happy to just give the kids our medals, of course, but I think they like that we each earn one! :)

I don't blame you. It would be nice for you all to have them. Makes for a great photo op. My son & I ran the CC5k before any medals on our first cruise. Even without them, our red-faced photo on the way back to the ship was our favorite prize for the effort.

I am sure you have seen them, but the new medals are so much better then the simple winner mickey ears they used to give outIMG_2643.JPG

Awesome photo!! Love it!!

DS and I are fresh off running the 5K and 10K together during the SW Light Side races in DL (he's dying to run the half with me, but that has to wait until he's 14)! We're doing the SW Dark Side races in Apr, so a little 5K during our 3/26 sail sounded like a really fun idea!

I think I'll check it out once onboard and make a decision then. The pic itself does seem like quite a cool reason to do it... :)

Thank you. That pic, that's our prize! My husband was there when we ran and took lots of pics along the way. He didn't run, though. It is so nice to have all those candids, too.

You'd think the ship's photogs would catch on to a great opportunity standing at the 5k finish to snap photos of runners finishing. Bet they'd sell the crap out of those.

Prior to running the 5k back in 2011 it was a toss-up whether we'd even have bibs. I didn't care either way. I wanted to do it. I do recall thinking about having my own medals made up so my son could have one. He ran with me all summer long prior to that trip. That summer was so brutal. We had over 30 days straight of 100+ temps. Over the summer this kid, who is no more a morning person than me, drug himself out of bed at 4:30-ish every other day minimum so we could finish our runs before the sun was up.

It's worth noting, I've been to Castaway 13 times since that first visit when we ran. (2 double dips in there) I have never run the CC5k again. I would if the ship docked earlier and the run could be completed before the sun was up over the horizon. But I've never run it again because of the heat. Too taxing on me and I live in the south. I don't tolerate heat/overheating well. Like I see people out running in the sunshine on a 90+ degree day and it's hard for me to wrap my brain around how they're still conscious. I've had mild heat-stroke before, though. When at Castaway, after being so hot running, the LAST thing I want is to be outside at the beach. So for me, no medal is worth sacrificing the rest of the day. That's just ME. I do NOT tolerate heat well. I think it's worth doing at least once and I'm glad we did it. That pic is worth so much more now because of the unlikelihood of me ever doing it again. :D

They would not allow my son to register or participate last March and he was 11 years, 8 months old, only a few months shy of his 12th birthday. I tried a couple different times to get an exception. They said it was a liability issue and they were very strict about it. I even offered to sign a release and have his doctor sign a permission slip. Nope. It didn't occur to me that since it's not a real formal race, he probably could have gotten by running beside me in an unofficial capacity without registering, and they never mentioned this as an option. I figured if they were that strict about the sign up they would have some form of system in place so only those who registered could participate. It can't hurt to try I guess. Maybe you could even put your bib on your child half way through when no one is paying attention so when he crosses the finish line he'll get the medal?

They have an on the course photographer now. Not sure if they only do the beginning or if it is like a set time and if you finish during that time you can get a finishers photo as well as course photo but it was my best cruise photo! It has been the only runDisney photo purchase I've ever made because it was much cheaper than the marathonphoto prices.
