I was out shopping earlier. The cashier was new and had problems ringing something up. Later on I checked my receipt to make sure I wasn't double charged for something and I noticed the reason the register was going balistic was because my Entertainment Book didn't scan correctly. So I didn't get charged for it.

I don't have time to go back to the store now. I feel guilty about it and think I may go back tomorrow, but I wonder if all the times I have been overcharged and double charged for items if this is my time to break even?

What would you do?

call them or go back. A similar situation happened to my daughter last weekend. She was at Toys R us buying a chair for her "nephew" her cousin's son. Purchased the chair for $30 had them load the box in the back of truck, and off she went. Next day she opens the box to show me the chair, lo and behold there are 2 chairs in the box. She toyed with the fact that her other "nephew" could use the chair and I said yes he could. Go back to the store and pay for it and we'll keep it. The girl behind the counter thought she was nuts but that's the way we are - honest. Personally we couldn't knowingly keep that chair and not pay for it.

To each his own. Keep the receipt and go back when you have time.

I would call the store, alert them to the error and ask them how they wanted to handle it. If they said to forget it, then I would. If they asked me to come back and pay for the item,I would let them know I would be in at my convenience to pay for the item in the next few days.

It really wouldn't matter to me whether or not they might have overcharged me in the past, as their actions are not my responsibility. Returning to pay for the item would be my responsibilty, so my actions would be dishonest if I failed to contact them once I discovered the mistake.

They sell Entertainment books in the store?

Sorry, off track. I would go back, because I would feel too bad myself.

This happened to me last month. I was buying 2 aluminum baking pans that were about $1.50 each. They were nestled inside each other. When I was in checkout, the cashier just scanned it once without taking the inside one out. I told her, "There's another one in there." She smiled and said, "I know." I figured maybe she scanned the outside one twice, so I let it go. When I got home, I checked the receipt and realized she only charged me for one. Maybe she thought I was cute??? :scared1:

I let it go, but then again, it was a lot cheaper than an entertainment book. I would just call the store to let them know what happened.

they aren't even answering the phone!!! Bah!

Edit:
Never mind, got through. She said I was too honest and if it was bothering my conscience, I could come back whenever and pay for it. :)

Now I just have to see when I can get my lazy self back over there. Wonder if they are open until midnight?

Ditto.

I went to a Burlington Coat Factory last month, and purchased a few items. When I got to my car, I threw in the bags, then I went to throw in my coat which was hanging over my arm...only, I was WEARING my coat, and realized I was still holding two pairs of pants, with the hangers and price tags hanging off of them even! I was mortified. Went back in, saw the manager standing near a checkout and said, "I just walked out of the store with these pants!" and he said "Really? Welcome back!" :)

If I discover the mistake after I'm home, it's their loss. I'll point out their mistakes if I'm still at the store or nearby, but I'm not going to make a special trip anywhere to rectify it.

My other personal "rule" is that they only get one shot at fixing it. One time I went to a big sale at a clothing boutique. I bought a bunch of clothes and went out to my car. I started thinking about how little I had paid and looked at my receipt and sure enough, they hadn't charged me for 3 items. I went back in and told them and they rang me up again. When I got home I realized that they still hadn't charged me for one thing. I wasn't going to drive back there so they could have a THIRD chance to ring me up correctly!

If I notice a mistake while in line, still in the store or parking lot I will bring it to the clerks attention but once I am home....forget it....Now I did go back once with a bottle of vitamins that I hadnt been charged for....they looked at me like I was completely nuts for worrying about paying for the vits....I had to wait and wait, explain my story a number of times and finally they took my money.....It was a total pain....

That happened to me the other day at Toys 'R Us. I called and asked if they'd take a credit card over the phone. They said no. I asked the lady how I should handle it, and she answered, "I guess you can come back and pay, or just, you know, whatever." So I still don't have a clue.

In retrospect, it would have been nice if she had told me exactly how much the item was, with tax, and then given me their mailing address so I could send a check. Now I'm going to have to go back, and TRU is crazy at this time of year. I'm not making a special trip. They'll get my money when I feel like going there.

When the store tells you to come back and pay I don't think they really are expecting you to show up. I'm not even sure how our store would handle this situation and I worked customer service! I know we have called people when a check was mistendered and if they say they aren't going to come in and correct it, there isn't anything we can do about...the cashier is just given a shortage report that day and we take the loss/gain.

I probably wouldn't go back with that response. JMHO. :)

My DH got $10 too much change last week and turned around and went back into the store. I would let them know if their was a mistake and next time I'm in the store pay for it.

I guess I am a bad person also. I wouldn't worry about it. I used to be a customer service manager and was in charge of training cashiers. I would not put a cashier on by themselves if they were not trained properly, that is such an inconveniece to the customer. Just my opinion.

Guess I'm a bad person too. I'd chalk it up to Good Luck and say Merry Christmas to myself. If I noticed it at the store OK. But I wouldn't drive all the way back at 2 bucks a gallon for gas to rectify their mistake. JMOP!

I recommend taking it back. When my son was really into Nintendo 64, he bought a game. With all the going back & forth, the clerk accidentally put an extra game in the bag & didn't charge us. When I realized what had happened, I took it back. It was a week before I could get to the store, but I asked to speak to a manager & let him know what happened. He was very surprised & appreciative. I just felt good for doing the right thing.
