I know this is probably silly, but . . .

I've heard that you should put all your film in your carryon. And, I've heard that the film takes up less space if you remove each roll from its box. But, do you also need to remove each roll from its canister, as well? I'm thinking that might not be a terrific idea, but I thought I'd better check with someone who knows more about it than I do. I don't want to cause a traffic jam at the X-ray machine because I wasn't prepared.

Help? Please?

Film should not be in your checked luggage.

A lot of people claim the scanners have damaged thier film. I routinely scan mine and have never had any issue. If you want a hand exam, do take them out of the canisters and put it all in a ziplock bag with NOTHING else to hand to the examiner.

I left mine in the canisters, and put them all in a ziploc in my carryon. They went through the scanners twice (once each way), and the pictures came out just fine (it was 400 speed fil - I'm told that higher speed film should be hand inspected because the scanner can damage it).

If you are going to ask to have it hand scanned (which I do recommend, as the scans are cumulative and you have no way of knowing how many times it has been scanned before you purchased it, ie: shipping scans) remove it from the box and put it in a zip lock bag (bring two in case you don't use all your film , the way you will be able to tell the exposed from the unexposed).
The speed of the film dose matter, BUT, so does the cumulative effect of scans. I have seen too many cases of xray damage to film to take any chances.
The plastic containers won't protect it from the scanner, but, it will protect it from other damage.
Always pack film in your carryon.

Your best bet is to carry on all your film. The check in scanners won't do any harm to your film unless the film speed is 1000 or greater. Most vacationers carry 100, 200, 400. I just keep it with me because I don't want anything to happen to it (lost bags, random bag checks, etc).

That really is not true. the effects are cumulative. You have no idea how many times it may have been scanned before you buy it. I have processed thousands of rolls of film, and the damage done by scanners has been evident more times than I care to count.
NEVER put your film in checked baggage as the xrays will kill it, exposed or unexposed.
To me, hand checking is the only way to go, I would not chance any photos ever.
The TSA is responsible for safe flights, they do not process film.

I know that this is a bit off the subject, but someone correct me if I am wrong.... I have been told that the scanners are fine on the digital media cards, but I still don't trust it. I put my digital media cards in a tiny ziploc bag in my pants pocket and put it in the basket of "pocket change" when I go through the metal detector. That way it doesn't get scanned at all..... right?

there is no danger from the scanners to memory cards, laptops, digital cameras, etc. Trust me, I do know. I do it often and there is no danger. It is not film. If you put the basket on the belt and it goes through the scanner, it is scanned. If you hand it to the TSA person, it does not get scanned.

Thanks, all! I intend to ask for a hand-check; I feel safer that way. My photos are too important for me to risk losing them. ;)

I just wasn't sure whether I should remove each roll of film from its canister before putting it in the Ziplock bag or not.

LOL, and you got more than you asked for, right? don't remove the film from the canisters. The canisters help keep it free of dust, dirt, and debris.

Thank you so much, Gail! That's what common sense told me, but I haven't flown since the machines went in and I wasn't sure.

I plan to have a blast, and you can be sure I'll think of you (and this thread) as I hand my bag of film to the checker (or whatever in the heck they're called). :teeth: Seriously, if it weren't for the info I pick up on these boards, I wouldn't be half as prepared as I am. Thanks for your part in that.

Once, I didn't remove the film from the canisters, just the boxes and handed it through, only to have the fellow open each canister( I had 20 rolls of film). DH wasn't thrilled standing along side. So now I do take the film from the canisters and put it in a ziplock bag.

another tip I have learned is to turn your flash off when taking pixs of the fireworks or Christmas tree lights.

I'm packing tomorrow!!!!!!! Yeeaaahhh!!!!
