Could anyone let me know if glow sticks are allowed in your carry on bags? Also, what about drink mixes (the small individual packets that are for water bottles)?

Thanks....

Glow sticks contain liquids and theoretically would be allowed only if each one was less than 3oz and you could comfortably fit them all into a one-quart zip-lock bag with any other liquids or gels you are carrying. I say theoretically, because I can see a scenario where a TSA screener might balk at a bag full of identical 3oz green tubes even if it technically meets the standard.

If the drink mixes are powdered, no problem. If they are liquid, they would need to be less than 3oz and packed in your one allowable one-quart zip-lock back along with all of your other liquids and gels.

Agreed - better to pack the glow sticks in your checked bags or ship them to your hotel.

Finally got throught to TSA and the man I talked to said that they should be okay as long as they are less than 3 ounces. But, I did find on the TSA website that gel candles are not permitted as carry on at all....don't you think that would be the same thing?

Thanks.

The problem is that the TSA operates in all the airports and employs many agents. They are not all on the same page and even within the same airport what may be ok today isn't ok tomorrow. In fact if you call back and get another agent you are likely to get a completely different answer :(

The new policy is that liquids of 3.4oz are allowed but only as much as can fit in a one quart zip lock bag and one bag per traveler. So I suppose you could fill one quart zip lock with glow sticks for each passenger but there is still a good chance you will have to either throw them out or go back and check them. This also means that you won't be able to take any other liquids you may want like hand lotion, purell etc.

Personally I would just check the glow sticks through with your checked luggage. The more streamlined you can make going through security the better off you will be.

OTOH the powder drink mixers are fine but you can't bring the water to mix them that has to be purchased after security.

All the information is here on the TSA website:
