My family and I have to take a 9 hour plane trip. The plane will only be selling box lunches and turkey wraps :sad2:

What would everyone suggest in the way of food to carry on the plane? Can we carry food on the plane?

Yes, you can take your own food on the plane. Many of the in airport restaurants will package food to go on the plane for you, or you can bring your own from home. Obviously, I'd avoid bringing anything overly fragrant since you'll be dining in a pretty cramped environment.

On behalf of your fellow passengers-please no Mexican food

I'd bring sandwhiches in a colapsible cooler, use a couple frozen juice boxes to keep them cool then drink the juiceboxes!

Like the other said, think about what you are bringing before you bring it. I'd avoid salami, liverwirst, anything with curry, sauerkraut, etc. You might want to stick to turkey, ham, roast beef which are pretty nuetral in aroma.

Don't forget to pack some snacks as well, pretzels, chips, cookies. I'd avoid fresh fruit, you can't bring it into Florida if you don't finish it.

Anne, I have never heard that you can't bring fresh fruit into FL although it makes sense....HI, yes but not FL.

Has anyone ever heard an announcement on a plane about this?

We almost always have an apple in our son's food pack along with other things(diabetic).....all these years have we been breaking the law :confused3 or is this new?

9 hrs. What airline takes 9hrs from Indiana to Orlando? Heck even LAX-MCO is only 6hrs. You must have a lengthy layover somewhere. I would bring lots of pre-packaged snacks that if you don't eat them onboard you can bring them with you to the hotel for snacking. Ideas: fruit cups, raisins, granola bars, fruit rollups, trail mix, cereal bars, etc. Eat a big breakfast before leaving.

Not new, been the law for twenty some years. They don't adequately enforce it IMHO. Same reasons as HI. The Medfly was introduced to FL by one woman bringing in contraband, and it did millions and millions in damage to the agriculture in FL.

Instead of a fresh apple, applesauce might be an alternative? (I don't know--just wondering)

The OP didn't say she was flying to MCO.

9 hours is HI or some parts of Europe from ORD. Have fun wherever you are going, Laz.

Anne, yep applesauce does work fine and we sometimes do bring it.

Do any airlines make an announcement about this?

Any airline that flies to Europe or Hawaii will serve a hot meal on these routes. Even Hawaii from the West coast gets a hot meal in Coach. All airlines that fly the US to Europe will also serve a full hot meal in coach and not a buy on board boxed cold sandwich.

Silly me for thinking the poster was flying to Orlando since this is the DISNEY transportatin forum :confused3

Even charters?

And although we fly pretty often...well, actually my DH flies at least twice/week, I certainly don't know what all airlines offer. My experience has been the same as yours but who knows where the OP is going or what airline she is on? She was just asking a transportation question....not necessarily about WDW. It happens often on this board. Everyone tries to help each other. :sunny:

Do you provide food service to some airlines? If so, we'll be sure to ask you many questions. :sunny:

Flying 250,000 miles per year and no that isn't a typo that is two hundred fifty thousand PER YEAR for the last 6 years gives me a huge sampling and unique perspective on airline inflight services. Why don't we just wait for more information from the original poster and give factual information about her specific flight. Another helpful sight is www.airlinemeals.net , this is a site where people post photos of food received on specific flights. Frankly I think all airline food is disgusting and would advise bringing on food or eating before on any flight. My BF :lovestruc and I are flying First Class on Singapore Airlines to Bali in a few weeks and instead of eating what is supposed to be some of the best airline food in the world he has made it clear in no uncertain terms that on our layover in LAX (Los Angeles) that we will be taking a taxi to In-N-Out Burger, his favorite fast food. We both used to work on the West Coast and don't have In-N-Out burger. I guess it's a good thing since I will have already had dinner a few hours pre flight I will have more room for Krug, Dom Perignon and caviar in flight! :teeth:

:wave2: Just got back from Hawaii about a month ago. There was no announcement about fruit being brought in, you only had to declare if you had any fruit that was not already native or sold in Hawaii. (Which, apples are.)

For the meals, my husband and I just packed a small portable cooler. Keep in mind, they do count this as one of your carry-ons, and are very strict about it fitting under your seat. They did sell sandwiches (turkey wraps) and although we didn't buy any, others in our group did and said they actually weren't bad, for airline food standards. They do sell snack packs in between, too, but it's not anything you can't buy on your own (nuts, granola, etc.). As far as hot meals, the only ones that got served those during our 9 hour flight were in first class!

Hope this helps, don't know about a 9 hr flight in the contential US, which sounds like what you are asking about. My husband travels alot and said that most airlines now are opting for the "pay for your food" option, and even then it's not a hot meal. Good luck!

I should have told everyone that it was a nonstop Chicago to HI

Northwest is only selling boxed lunches for $5 and turkey wraps for $3 I am glad to hear the wraps are decent, but a lack of a hot meal on a long flight is another example of the airlines treating people like cattle. It no wonder so many people drove to Florida over spring break!

You're right, Laz. Service on airlines is just not what it used to be. I remember china even in coach, seats that could be flipped to face each other, etc..

Of course, we paid a lot more in today's dollar for those flights. ;)

I hope you have a great trip to HI. Which island? We were on Maui from 12/31 to 1/11. Flew UA. We were in first thanks to my husband's ff miles but I do think the meals in coach were still free. Of course, the meals in first are not as good as coach was many moons ago but oh, well.

mookie, that is interesting about your small cooler being counted as carryon. Our second son has had type I diabetes for many years and we carry a small cooler for him. We have never been told it counted. In his case, I'm sure it would be allowed anyway but no one has even asked us about it. As you said, it does have to be stowed under the seat or overhead. For us, it is always under the seat...anything else would defeat the purpose. It sounds as if you may have been on NW?

Anyway, have a wonderful trip Laz! :cool1: :cool1:

We are going to be in Maui for one week, followed by a week on Kuai

Aloha Brudda!!!! :jumping1:

Two weeks in Hawaii...very sweet! :sunny: The food on the plane won't even matter, will it?

Aloha! :boat:

Just thought to let you know. Last year we went to Maui. When leaving the airport to come back home, we jokingly asked how much it would be to upgrade to first class, just couldn't stand the thought of getting back on that plane in coach. Was surprised to learn it was $250 for a upgrade to first class.

When we booked this trip, I had asked about 1st class upgrade for the Maui to Seattle portion and was told soemthing like $2000, which was nuts. According to the man at the tix counter, this only applies to the Maui airport on flights departing for cont. states if they have seats available.

Call me a country hick, but I've never done 1st class, and this was just the coolest thing ever! Oh to be like a bizlionare and fly like that all the time.

The week in Kuai is a time shareshare we traded our Myrtle Beach time share for :earboy2: With the cost of the flights, it makes more sense to stay an extra week on another island.

I can only hope for a cheap upgrade.

I like to bring a large cup of instant soup or a cup-o-noodles type of thing. It weighs practically nothing, so it's easy to carry along. When mealtime comes along, I ask the flight attendant to fill it with hot water, and I ask for plastic spoon as well. A few minutes later, I have a hot meal. Usually I pack cookies, pretzels or chips as well.

Laz, you are repeating our same trip we took a month ago! Flew to Maui for a week, then Kauai. Rented a condo/timeshare at the Radisson/Kauai Beach Villas in Kauai, and stayed at the Aston Kaanapali Shores on Maui. We were there for my sisters wedding. There were about 34 of us, so we were scattered among a few properties. Where are you staying? Feel free to PM me with any questions about the islands! :sunny:

As far as our flight, we too, left Chicago to Maui (nonstop on the way there, layover in LA on the way back.) We flew American, so as far as the food goes, that is all I know for that flight. I must say, as much as most of those in our party liked flying nonstop, I wasn't fond of it. On the way home, we took the 11:15pm out of Kauai, slept the whole way to LA, then got off LA at 6:30am for a nice 2 hour leg break, and a chance to grab a HOT breakfast (they sold bagels and cream cheese and cold cereal on the flight). It seemed to make getting home go faster (not that we were excited to be back for the cold weather!!!!) Hopefully you'll be there soon, so the whales will still be there...they said it was one of the most populated years they've had in 50 years, and to see them was amazing!

BCV23, We actually called AA before we left to inquire about the cooler being counted as a carry on. They told us over the phone that it would be counted, so we never even tried to bring another one on. I'm wondering if for medical purposes, they would make an exception to add it as a 3rd carryon? :confused3
