So I am reading the carry-on rules for US destinations and I am actually more confused. I am hoping one of you frequent travellers can help :lovestruc
Here are my questions based on the CATSA rules below.
1. I plan on bringing a small carry-on plus a small purse. Can I put my small camera inside the purse or is that a 3rd item?
2. Can my DH bring on a backpack with our netbook inside the backpack? Does the netbook count as a carry-on or personal electronics?

The following items do not count towards the one carry-on bag limit: One of the following will be permitted in addition to the carry-on bag: a purse or laptop* or camera bag**.
*Regular carrying cases for laptop computers means small bags designed only to hold a laptop computer and its accessories. Laptop cases that have extra compartments (e.g., expandable cases, cases with wheels and a collapsible handle, backpack-type cases) are allowed, but count as the person’s one carry-on bag.
**Cameras and accessories in purpose-designed carrying cases (applies to both still and video cameras, including large, professional-grade cameras and equipment)

I would put my camera in my purse and the netbook in the backpack and then you each have one carry on item. Doesn't matter what's inside the carry on or how much stuff you can get inside of it, it's still just one each! That's how I would do it.:goodvibes:thumbsup2

agreed - when you go through the security screening, you will have to take out your netbook and put it in one of the plastic bins, but it doesn't count as an extra item, whether or not you put it in your backpack. You don't need to take out your camera so you can just tuck it into either your purse or carry-on bag. We flew to Miami in January and again last week and they weren't nearly as picky now as they were back in Jan...

From what I can gather from the rules a notebook (or laptop) computer has to go in a bag specifically designed for one and can not go in a backpack.

You should be fine with your camera in your purse or carry on bag.

Thanks all!! We haven't flown in a long time and we are just not sure what to expect but would like to follow the rules if we could only understand them ;)

If you live in kingston im assuming your flying from toronto? If you havent booked yet have you considered driving to nearest us airport like syracuse. We fly out of buffalo all the time, never out of toronto half the price. They only allow you 1 carry on otherwise there wouldnt be room on the jet for all the carry ons. I have my carry on which is small luggage bag with wheels and handle, i put camera some clothes small stuff what ever i can get in there to keep my check in bag under 50 lbs. Obviously i dont carry liquids in my carry on. As far as my lap top, it goes into my carry on until i reach scanner then you remove it to go thru scanner, then i use it at airport and slip it back in carry on until im at my seat. If i want to use it on flight i take it out and use it on jet. My wife brings the largest bag she can use that will fit under seat or in compartment above, and puts everything in that.

This time we are flying out of Toronto - WestJet as we are going to Vegas and wanted a direct flight. But when we go to Orlando in December I plan on JetBlue out of Syracuse because of all the good things I have heard on the Dis :)

So lets say I screw up and put something in my carry-on that I shouldn't. Will I still have my checked baggage with me so I can put it in there or will it already be checked? I hope this isn't a crazy dumb question...

You will check in with your airline as normal where they will tag your bags with the luggage tags. Next you head to US Customs with your bags, you actually get to pre clear US Customs in Canada, then you put your luggage on to a conveyor belt for it to head to the baggage facility. You then head through security.

Do they allow backpacks again? With that last scare they had they took that away. :confused3

Just wondering because we always used backpacks for the kids and when I heard you couldn't do that anymore I thought .....oh no!

yes, they allow backpacks again. The restrictions they had before are no long in effect.

It seems from the CATSA website that if you laptop goes into a bag that's not JUST your laptop and accessories, it's considered a carry-on. So your backpack with the netbook in it IS the carry on.

I don't think they care much about the camera though...I always have that in my purse and have never been bothered by it.

from what I can figure out from there site you are allowed 1 carry on bag that can be a duffel bag, gym bag or backpack that fits certain dimensions plus you can bring on either a purse or a bag containing a laptop with it's advisories. I don't think you are allowed to put a laptop into a backpack anymore as far as I can tell it says that it has to be in it's own bag.

fyi- breaking news on cnn, passenger tried to light his shoe on flight 663 united...chances are we'll be travelling with restriction again...

No, your computer can go into any bag. HOWEVER, you need to pull it out of your backpack/carry on bag when you go through security. If you have it in an approved sleeve, some airports do not make you remove it from the sleeve.
