What is the best way to see some of the historic sites in Nassau--walking or by carriage? It will be my DH, me, and 2 19 year old girls. I think we would have to get 2 carriages. Will they stay together? How long does the carriage ride last and will they stop to let you take pictures? Or how long should we plan if we do a walking tour. What historic sites do you recommend seeing?

Thanks!

Donna

The carriage ride doesn't last that long. It does go down a street with the parliment buildings, but you are not able to stop and take pictures. i want to say it lasted 20 minutes long. it was 10 a piece plus a tip.

While the carriage ride does pass some of the sites, that really isn't the main focus. The driver will tell you about the sites, but it's very quick and sounds very scripted. The kids might like the carriage ride just for fun, but if you want some real history and to see a lot more, the walking tour would be better. If you do the carriage ride, remember that the price is negotiable. They usually quote really high at first.
You could request that the two stay together, but remember that all of the carriages are owned independently and the drivers are all competitors.

We were planning on having the carriage take us to Ardastra Gardens. Will they do that? Is the ride a round trip thing instead? Thought we could see what there is to offer while still making good time to see the flamingos.

Oh no, I have I not done enough research??

When Barb says they are competitors she is not kidding! When we were in Nassau we decided to do a carriage ride. We had made friends with one of the women, Theresa, in the straw market. Her demeanor and story touched us deeply. She suggested that we ask for her BIL, Thomas. Five years later and I still remember his name! So off we went to row upon row of horses and carriages. Well, the first guy we came to, Omar, said you don't want Thomas and tried to talk us into taking his carriage. This really stuck in my memory because I remember his name too! It was in good fun and he was nice so we said if we couldn't find Thomas then we would come back to him. Well then we went past a few more asking for Thomas. One guy pipes up and says, yeah I'm Thomas. We start to get into his carriage and Omar comes running up yelling: That isn't Thomas and starts fighting with the Imposter. Just yelling but it looked like it was going to come to blows in a second. Then the real Thomas who was hearing his name comes up and we say that Theresa, suggested that we take his carriage. The funny thing was that I think he really wanted a longer break and didn't truly WANT the fare. He kind of mumbled stuff and did not seem that interested. We were wishing we had gone with Omar as he seemed funny and fun! All in all we felt like meat that was being fought over by a pack of dogs.:crazy2:

Nope, you can't take the carriage to see the flamingos. They have a pretty much pre-set route that they follow.
And one more thing to watch out for. They will offer to use your camera to take a photo of you, but they expect extra money for that.

Thanks for the advice. I think we'll just walk to some of the historic sites. I just hate to put 2 teenage girls in a carriage by themselves and they want to go to Senor Frogs and Hard Rock Cafe, too.
