Southern California Carlsbad to Anaheim

I will be making the trip on a Tuesday, surprising my kids with a trip to DL (we would just finished at Legoland)

Given that Legoland is closed on Tues, there is nothing keeping us there and we can't check into the DHL until 4pm - can someone recommend the best time to make the trip? I'm keen to avoid traffic at any cost!

I'm keen to hear what route you would recommend. It's our last day with the car so was thinking if we could stop by some beaches or shopping malls that may be more harder to get to once we stay in Anaheim.

I'd say any time between 10-3 will be good. If you're going to stop, leave earlier. If you're going straight to Anaheim, you can leave later. Great outlets in Carlsbad...

When you say leave earlier, do you mean closer to 10am or before?

Yup, about an hour. And oops, sorry if I was confusing. I just meant if you plan to go shopping and to the beach, I'd leave your hotel at 10 or so. Basically as long as you're on the road before 3 you should be okay because then you'll get to Anaheim around 4. Later than that and you'll start to hit traffic up there.

How many days will you have at DLH? You can arrive early and leave your bags at the hotel until your room is ready. Then you could swim at the hotel pools or shop and walk around Downtown Disney. I've never stayed at the DLH (just the GC) but paying that much for an on site hotel, I'd want to maximize my time there to enjoy the amenities and explore the hotel.

One more thing to consider: every time we have arrived in Anaheim before six pm, my kids go stir crazy having to wait until the next day to go to DL.

Route: Legoland and Disneyland are both very close to or right off Interstate 5. Check it out on mapquest or google maps.
