The Cast: Clark (DH, 30) and myself (Meredith, 28)

The Why: Well, why not? Actually, I’ve been dying to go on a cruise since I was about 18. You hear about folks going on cruises and spending time on beautiful beaches with girly drinks, so who wouldn’t want to do that? Actually, a couple of years ago, I saw a show on the Travel Channel about DCL, and once I saw Castaway Cay I knew that I had to go there! It became my lifelong goal to go to Castaway Cay. I bugged my DH for months (years?) until he finally agreed that we could consider taking a cruise. Well, those were the magic words! I began to research possible cruises and we finally decided on the Disney Magic January 3 – 8, 2011.

Day One, Part 1:
Finally, after months of counting down (and annoying my DH, family, friends, and co-workers), it was time to cruise!! I could barely sleep the night before. I got about 2-3 hours of sleep and then spent the rest of the night rereading the DIS or lying in bed telling myself that if I didn’t get some sleep I would be too tired to actually enjoy the first day of the cruise. It didn’t help. Finally, it was late enough that I could justify actually getting up, showering, and getting ready for the cruise (just as DH was getting into bed for the night). Once I was ready, I tried to get DH up. For those of you who know us, you know this is a major event. DH does not wake up easily. When you have someone who desperately wants to sleep and someone who can barely contain her excitement and wants to get going, you will end up with a fight. A fight is exactly what happened.

The fight was short lived and we were finally on the road at 7:00 am, with our excessive luggage and my very nice mom driving us to the port from Jacksonville. We stopped at Chick-fil-A for breakfast, and while my mom and DH listened to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on CD, I took a nap. I woke up a couple of times, and about 12 miles from the port, I finally woke up for good and I thought I was going to explode from excitement. We arrived at the port around 9:50 AM. My mom pulled up to the drop off area and we got out of the car. We handed two suitcases to a porter, gave him a tip, and followed instructions to walk to the gate to wait in line. There were still a lot of people from the last cruise waiting to be picked up, but we finally found the line we were supposed to be waiting in and stood there with our carry on bags.

The weather was perfect, and I did my best to not bounce in place while we waited for security to let us in. At 10:00, we walked up to the gate, gave our room number, and were instructed to get in line to go through the x-ray. We did that, and before we knew it, we were in the lobby waiting to get checked in and get our cards. I was so excited when I got the coveted #2 boarding pass!

We then found a comfy seat while I tried to explain to DH what a boarding pass #2 meant. We spent the next hour and a half reading through the Navigator (for my friends reading this that don’t know what the Navigator is, it is basically a daily schedule of events for the ship), exploring the terminal, looking for the Tigger pin that had fallen off of DH’s lanyard (it’s still missing), and taking some photos.

Finally, at 11:45, the family of the day was announced, and shortly thereafter, it was time for group #2 to enter the ship!!! I practically dragged DH to the front of the line, had our cards swiped, and went on our way. We skipped the on board photo, and as we approached the ship, I looked at DH for confirmation that I should still ask to be introduced in the manner in which we had agreed. For those of you reading this trip report that aren’t familiar with DCL, when you board the ship for the first time, the crew will announce your name and a bunch of the crew will be in the atrium clapping for you.

A few moments later, the CM announced us as “Carl & Ellie on their next great adventure,” and we walked into the atrium with lots of applause and a huge smile on my face. DH and I had agreed on this introduction because I wanted to do something cute and we both love the movie UP. I don’t know how many people “got it” but we thought it was adorable and it made me happy, and that is all that counts!

Stay tuned for the rest of the report!

Day One, Part 2:

We left off as we got on the ship and were announced. The first thing we did was ask where we could find Rockin’ Bar D. Instead of just pointing, we had a Cast Member (CM) actually escort us down the hallway to make sure we actually made it there! Gotta love the service from Disney! At any rate, we were one of the first people there and were able to get a brunch reservation for day at sea (day 4) at 10:30 at Palo (the adult restaurant on board). Happy that I had accomplished what I needed to get done, we headed to lunch at Parrot Cay.

We were greeted and immediately seated right in the middle of the restaurant. I let DH go get his food first since he always takes so long to eat (it is best to let him get a head start). While I was waiting for him with our stuff, a waiter came and got our drink order. I got a diet coke and ordered a coke for DH (I know everyone really wants to know these details). The next couple of photos are for the food porn lovers out there:

One of the last photos is of the Strawberry Soup and it was FABULOUS! I wish I had gotten more than just one.

After lunch, we took our carry-ons up to deck 10 and explored and took some photos.

It’s hard to tell, but you can see the Kennedy Space Center in the last photo. I was so excited to finally be on board! I just knew that we were going to have a blast! Soon it was 1:30 and we headed down to Deck 2 to see our stateroom!

I had seen photos of the exact room from a Diser, but it’s not the same as actually seeing the room for yourself! It was plenty big for the two of us, but I could see how it might get a bit cramped if you had a bunch of little kids in there with you. While exploring our room, I discovered an envelope with all the tickets of things that we had booked ahead of time. Sadly, they didn’t include my ticket for the Stingray Adventure which I had pre-booked. So while DH went to guest services to inquire about the cognac tasting, I went to the Port Adventures desk to get the tickets for the stingray adventure. This is where I ran into some mass confusion.

After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, it was finally my turn. I explained to the woman at the desk that I had pre-booked the stingray adventure on Castaway Cay but I hadn’t gotten the ticket in my envelope with all the other tickets. She did not understand what I was saying at all. I had to explain several times and she finally just looked me up on the computer. She saw that I had booked so she asked me if I wanted to cancel! Noooooooooooooooo! I just wanted my ticket! She finally had to go get a manager to get permission to print the ticket again (??) and soon I was on my way with my stingray ticket. I thought that would be the last of my problems with this, but I would later learn how very wrong I was.

Meanwhile, DH had found out that the cognac tasting was $20 per person, which was just a bit too much for us. We swung by the Vista Spa to drop off my raffle ticket (I didn’t win anything) and then headed to Deck 10 to join the 2:30 walking tour of the ship. It was neat to have a guided tour, but I’m not sure I really learned anything from it. Still, it was nice to see all the major highlights of the ship.

Afterwards, we went to our room to get ready for the safety drill. It was at this point that I started to get worried. When we got to the room, one of our suitcases had arrived, but not the one with most of our clothes. There were tons of suitcases in the hallway, and I really didn’t understand why we wouldn’t be getting both suitcases at the same time. DH tried to keep me calm and told me there was nothing to worry about. Well, I still worried, but I tried to not worry out loud too much (not sure if I was successful or not).

When we heard the announcement for the safety drill, we put on our life vests and headed up to Deck 4.

The safety drill was pretty painless, even with the two year old screaming bloody murder next to us. I felt bad for him; I didn’t feel too comfortable in the life vest either! I like that Disney makes you wear them though; I think it is good safety practice (I know that they just started to allow you to show up without the vests). We hurried back to our room and then up to Deck 10 where we found the perfect table to watch the Sail Away Party.

Of course we got one of the drinks:

We sat there and enjoyed the drinks and the show! Disney definitely knows how to do it right. I LOVE the Disney horn, but it did startle us when it went off!

Afterwards, we went to the adult bar and got a Sail Away drink and a Bahama Mama and then relaxed in these really comfortable blue chairs on deck 9 as we sailed away. It was at this point that I was starting to relax and was happy that I wasn’t having any sea sickness problems! When I realized that it had been a couple of hours since we ate, I hurried over and got some chicken fingers and fries to bring back for us to enjoy.

Strawberry Soup, a Steamer Trunk, and the coveted #2 Boarding Pass! It doesn't get much better than that...and you haven't even sailed yet!!!

Looking forward to hearing more about your cruise!

I love the introduction (what's funny is, you both look a lot like DH and me--about 12-13 years ago!)
