Caricatures Question

Hi. So I’m trying to decide if it’s just the norm.. if you have gotten caricatures done do they at least resemble the person?? I had one done at Pop Century resort just before departure and it’s truly awful. The artist told me it would take a half hour (we had just over an hour before our bus was due). Minutes before our bus got there I asked her if I could pay shipping so she had time to finish it as we had to leave. She became flustered and couldn’t find slips to fill out to ship so she slapped a few more colors on and called it done. Once I had a chance to look at it, it literally looks nothing like any of my children even though she was given several pictures of each and saw them in person. She also left pencil markings all over and what is done looks very amateur and not worth the $100 I paid for it. Has anyone else had issues? I’m not one to complain about cast members but I really feel like I wasted money on something that doesn’t even resemble my kids a little bit and just looks sloppy.

We did one at CR not too long ago and it's pretty awful too. I mean, it's a good drawing - it just looks nothing like my DD, not even an exaggerated version of her. I chalked it up to maybe it was just the CM or maybe my DD just doesn't have the face for caricatures! :-) I'm assuming it's possible that any really good artist needed to move on/find other work during the COVID closure and it's hard to hire for that kind of position - but that's just me speculating as I have no first-hand knowledge.

I tipped well just to be nice, but it's still folded up in my filing cabinet at home where it will likely stay forever. It has sort of become our family joke every time we see an artist anywhere.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience.

On a podcast I listen too, they said the one at MK in liberty square area is very good. Maybe watch them do a couple and see what you think

We had some very good ones done at the Poly a few years ago (pre-pandemic). For reasons I can't remember, we only had 2 of our 3 kids done at the time. Later, we had the third done by a different artist at the Contemporary, and it was terrible. Rather than a fun caricature, it seemed like it was mocking my child, who is autistic and started to cry when he saw it. I refused to pay for that one and didn't take it. We found a way to get back to the Poly during that trip to have a better caricature done by the first artist, which turned out to be the best of the three, much to my son's delight.

I guess the lesson is that these are hit and miss depending on the artist.
