Carb it up! 8 days of pre- and post race food! Feb. 2014 *Complete*

That ravioli sounds delicious so it's a shame it wasn't a knock out of the park. It's hard to consider going there though when there's so many other restaurants in the World to try (and Raglan in DTD to boot)

Yeah, I mean it was good, but not anything super amazing that I dream about it lol. There are some dishes at Disney World that have definitely done that for me! (Later on in this trip our meal at Sanaa was definitely that!). And exactly - I just want to try everything, so for me to go back to a place I've already been, well, it has to be really good!

Hey Becky! Looking forward to the rest of your reviews.
Those shrimp look AMAZING! I worked at an Indian restaurant one summer in college and loved anything tandoori!

Mmm, I love Indian food! It must have been delicious to work in an Indian restaurant ;)

Chef Mickey's

If you've been following along on my TR you know that I ran the Enchanted 10k, went back to the room, showered, took a nap, and then got up for our 11:00 breakfast reservation at Chef Mickey's! A bunch of us that had done the race were going there together with our husbands. I'd never been there before, and it was husband's very first time in the Contemporary!

Chef Mickey's is your basic breakfast buffet, with typical breakfast foods. I'm not usually a big breakfast person but this was late enough in the day, and obviously have run 6 miles that morning, I was quite hungry and enjoying the food a lot!

They had lots of fresh fruit, which I love, so I piled up on that. And then of course you have to have a Mickey waffle! I put chocolate sauce on mine. Not as good as the toppings they had at Cape May, where they had delicious strawberry sauce and chocolate chips! And some bacon, scrambled eggs, and a pastry. That pastry was so good, I think it was raspberry filling. I got a second one of those and some more fruit after this plate.

Here's DH's first plate:

He was excited to see smoked salmon, since he loves that. And he loaded up on pastries too. I know he went back for more food after this too, but I don't have a pic of that.

And then of course the characters came around! We got to meet the Fab 5 in their kitchen outfits.

The girls posed with Mickey (and our medals!):

And the boys posed with Minnie!

Our server was awesome in that she helped us out with the discount. Not everyone had Tables in Wonderland, but one couple did. Normally if you're not paying on the same check you can't use TiW for others in the party. But she applied it for all of us anyway!

Normally, not including tax or tip or anything, it would have been $34.99 per person. But thanks to the discount we paid $36.11 including tax and tip!

Overall I'd give Chef Mickey's a 6.5 out of 10. Looking at those plates and realizing we paid over $70 for two people for that meal feels a little insane. The food was all fine, but it was nothing special, just your typical breakfast buffet. I know that the price is really for the characters, but at this point in my life I've met the Fab 5 a number of times... it's just not worth the price for us right now. Maybe if we had kids though, and it was a fun way to celebrate with our friends after the race. I can certainly see why some people would love it, but for us it's not something we'll do again, at least not any time soon!

I haven't been to Chef Mickey's since I was a kid, and I don't see any reason to go until we travel with kids of our own IMO. And even then there are plenty of other character buffets I would try first! I've heard nothing but 'meh' of CM as of late.

My aunt & family are going there for breakfast the day after our wedding (it'll be my cousins birthday!) so I'm interested to hear what they have to say.

Enjoying your reviews! I need to try Landscape of Flavors because the food looks great.

Chef Mickey's sounds like a good choice after running a 10K. You can eat as much as you like with no guilt!

Looking forward to more reviews-

Yeah, that's kind of my feeling too. I'm sure it would be incredible with kids that are excited to see Mickey and Minnie for the first time! I never went as a kid so I'm glad I experienced it once though.

Yes, I want to go back to Landscape of Flavors to try more :)

And a buffet is definitely a great choice after a race! You definitely work up an appetite!

Via Napoli

Because a bunch of our friends were doing the Half Marathon the next day, they wanted to go to a place with pasta. So Via Napoli was the selection! We had to wait a little while for a table, but when we did it was a great table! It was off to the left when you go in, right by the windows, and not near any other tables. While we were waiting I took a picture of the cool chandelier too:

And then it was on to the food! When I went on my solo trip I had gotten an individual sized pizza, and it was a bit too much for me to finish on my own. So DH and I decided to split an individual sized pie as well as an appetizer. That, along with the bread (and a snack a little later in the evening!) was good for us!

For the appetizer we chose the arancini (fried risotto balls filled with mozzarella & meat ragù):

I wasn't sure what I would think of these. I haven't had much risotto and I'm not a huge fan of red sauce, but DH was interested. Well, they tasted amazing! All of the flavors just worked together well and the outside was fried just the way I like my fried food. They were a decent size too. I'd give them an 8.5 out of 10 and DH gave them an 8 out of 10.

For our pizza we split the Prosciutto e Melone Pizza (white pizza, fontina, mozzarella, prosciutto, canteloupe, arugula):

It might sound like an odd combination, but it's all things that I love so I was very happy. As I mentioned not being a huge fan of red sauce, a white pizza is more my style. And I love proscuitto and arugula. The canteloupe was surprisingly a great way to balance the salty and sharp tastes! I give it a 9 out of 10. My only complaint is that because of the way the proscuitto is layered on it's difficult to cut into slices. DH gave it an 8 out of 10, but it was definitely a pizza that was more up my alley and he was kind enough to let me pick what we got!

Overall Via Napoli gets an 8.5 out of 10! The food was really good and we had a great location, which avoided the issue I had when I dined there by myself (the insanely high volume of the table next to me, as well as some not so great service).

Arancini: $11.00
Prosciutto pizza: $21.00

Total including tax and tip: $39.84

And after strolling around the World Showcase for a bit, we grabbed dessert in Morocco:

This was ice cream from the new stand next to Spice Road Table. They have unique flavors! I went with chocolate cinnamon, and DH had orange honey walnut. They let us sample flavors as well! It was really good, though I still think France has better ice cream (I am in love with their mint chocolate chip!)

Mmmmmm Via Napoli! I wish so badly we could squeeze it in for our next trip, it was amazing! I don't even remember what we had (other than the arancini and zeppole sans chocolate sauce) but I still want to go back! Maybe another time.

Mmmm orange honey walnut sounds great! So much food, so little time to try it all.

I still haven't gotten a dessert at Via Napoli, but they sound really good! And I know what you mean - I have an ever growing list of stuff I want to try in Disney World, but my stomach (and my wallet!) is only so big ;)

Joining in! With all of the Via Napoli reviews lately, I'm wishing we had time to add it, might have to work on that!

Welcome aboard! It's hard to say you should try to add it because that means cutting out another delicious Disney restaurant! :rotfl2: But it's definitely one we enjoy!

Leaning Palms

During our Typhoon Lagoon day we decided to grab lunch there, and I think we ended up at Leaning Palms. I don't have my receipt for this one. I wasn't expecting much given the fact that it was a water park and I didn't really know what to expect.

I got the turkey pesto sandwich with chips (with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, pesto aioli and choice of apple slices or house-made chips):

It's a pretty large portion - and it tasted great! The bread was definitely the highlight, as it was an herb crusted bread and worked well with the other flavors. It had cold cut style turkey, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and pesto. I really enjoyed it. The chips were good too - nice, fresh, and crisp. I'd give this an 8.5 out of 10.

DH had the chicken sandwich, also with chips (with Chipotle Ranch Dressing, lettuce, tomato and chocice of Apple Slices or house-made chips):

The chicken here was nice and he really enjoyed the chipotle ranch dressing. However, this sandwich did suffer the fate of the Disney bun - in that the thing basically just crumpled in his hands as he ate it. I don't know why Disney can't get buns that don't fall apart :( It was a typical chicken sandwich but everything else about it was good. He gave it a 7 out of 10.

All in all we'd give Leaning Palms an 8 out of 10! I was pleasantly surprised that water park food was so good, and honestly my sandwich was much better than the things that I've had at a number of counter service locations inside the parks. I'd love to see that Turkey Pesto sandwich offered elsewhere!

Yum, those chips look fantastic! They certainly look fresh. Nice that you were able to break away from the standard burger-chicken nuggets even at the water park!

You know, it always surprises me that so many people just want a burger or chicken fingers with french fries in theme parks. I like to go on the thrill rides but I have to have something lighter to do that! Especially in a water park, I don't want to feel bogged down with a burger in my belly!

California Grill

We were very excited to be trying our signature restaurant of the trip, Cali Grill! It had recently re-opened, but DH and I had never been before so it would be our first time experiencing it anyway. We went with two other couples.

We had a reservation but when we arrived we had to wait a bit, so we went out onto the balcony to take a look at Magic Kingdom and the castle. It was a really neat view! Even though it was February and windy up there, so even with my sweater I was a tad bit chilly.

I think we waited maybe 10-15 minutes before they brought us to our table, which had been decorated in honor of our celebrations - my friend's 30th birthday and everyone doing the races!

A side note - I really loved the napkins personalized to the restaurant. I probably liked them since orange is my favorite color ;)

I know we started with bread, but I honestly don't remember much about it except that it was very good. DH and I decided to split an appetizer, so we went with the oven dried tomato flatbread (Beefsteak Tomatoes, Mozzarella di Bufala, Aged Balsamic):

This was very nice, if a somewhat typical flatbread. But of course, we knew that when we ordered it! Not blown away but definitely enjoyable. I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

Right after they brought our apps out Wishes was going to begin, so we headed back out to the balcony to watch. It's really neat perspective to see Wishes from up there. And they pipe the music in so you can hear everything:

For my entree I wasn't sure what to get. Nothing was really appealing to me but I decided to go with the sweet potato gnocchi (cauliflower cream, root spinach, hazelnut emulsion, minus 8 vinegar):

So I'd never had Gnocchi before, and wasn't even sure what it was when I ordered it. But the dish sounded interesting. I have to say, I loved it! There wasn't just one part of it that stood out as being really good, it was just that everything as a whole worked well together. This is the vegetarian option so if you are vegetarian I don't think you'll be disappointed here! I give it a 9 out of 10.

DH ordered the pork two ways (Grilled Tenderloin, Goat Cheese Polenta, Mushrooms, Lacquered Belly, Applesauce):

He loved this and gave it a 9.5 out of 10. He said it was absolutely delicious. I asked him if he remembered the two different types of pork and if he could comment on that, and his response was "one was delicious and the other was even more delicious." So there you go :rotfl2:

DH opted not to get dessert, but I had seen pictures of something I had to have: the sundae sampler! (Frangelico Toffee, Reverse Root Beer Float, and "Banana Split")

So starting on the left is the banana split. This was the one most like a typical ice cream sundae, but in a mini dish. It was very nice. The real start though, was the reverse root beer float. So basically what this is, you have root beer flavored ice cream and vanilla flavored soda to pour on top. It was incredible! I don't know what made it so good but I just loved it and wished it was a whole lot bigger! I took a small sip of the vanilla soda by itself to see what that was like and it was excellent - I would totally drink it! Finally, we had the toffee. I'm not a huge fan of toffee but I ate the whole thing, so it certainly wasn't bad! ;) I'd give this dessert a 9 out of 10, but if they had a bigger reverse root beer float on its own it would get a 10 out of 10!

Overall we give Cali Grill a very strong 9 out of 10. We both loved our entrees and my dessert, and the app was very good too. Combine that with the nice atmosphere and the chance to watch Wishes and you've got one awesome restaurant!

Here's the price breakdown:

Soda: $2.99
Gnocchi: $32.00
Sundae sampler: $12.00
Tomato flatbread: $13.00
Pork: $37.00

Total before tax and tip: $96.99

Total including tax and auto 18% gratuity: $120.76

Loving your reviews! Probably should not have read them when I was hungry though.....

Especially happy to see a positive CG review - seemed like it wasn't getting great reviews right after the reopening.

I'm not a dessert person really, but that sampler at CG looks and sounds amazing!!!!!

I'm glad you loved Cali Grill! It's nice to see good reviews coming out of there as I know (like everything on the DIS when things change ;) ) that reception has been mixed. The pork two ways in particular looks divine!

I LOVE gnocchi! Your dish looks amazing - I've always thought I'd want to try the pork at CG but your choice would almost sway me (not like I'm eating there anytime soon haha)

Great review

I guess in some ways it's good that I hadn't eaten there before, because I didn't have any set things that I liked previously that are missing. I think a lot of people just don't like change ;) That dessert was just so good.

I know DH loved the pork! I'm totally with you on the mixed reviews probably being in part just due to change. As I said above I hadn't been before so I had nothing to compare it to, but we were impressed!

Great review

I'm really glad I picked the gnocchi because it was so delicious! Definitely something I'll look for on other menus now!

Lovely review of the CG. Everything looks amazing, and the view is one that just can't be beat!
