I put the Evenflo Triumph 5-point convertible car seat (khaki) on my baby registry. It's at Walmart. I'm assuming it's popular. Has anybody used this car seat? Anything bad or good to say about it? Any other recommendations for a great convertible car seat in the $100-$150 price range?

Thanks from a novice!

Yep--we have it and I personally love it! We got it when DD became too big for the infant carrier, and now she's 35lbs and still rides in it comfortably! The feature I liked on it the best was that you can adjust the straps from the sides of the seat (yellow knobs) and not a strap in the front. The strap in the front is not a big deal when the seat is forward facing, but when the seat is rear facing the strap is backed up against the car seat and is very hard to adjust (we have one of these kind in DH car). It also was very easy to install and use!

I did TONS of research on carseats before I purchased this one for DS. This one got WONDERFUL reviews for both ease of use and SAFETY. I LOVE THIS SEAT!! My son seems to love it too...he easily falls asleep in it! I, too, like the yellow adjuster knobs...it did take me a little while to figure it out...but they work good now. I also like this seat because he sits up high in it and can see out the front window (from the backseat middle position, of course!) The seat is big, bulky, and heavy IMO, but I think that's another reason I DO like it...it feels SAFE and STURDY...Not like those seats made out of thinner plastic. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CARSEAT. :thumbsup2

We have this seat too and are pretty happy with it. It's a little difficult to use and install, but we eventually bought a Cosco (same as Eddie Bauer) and I realize that all car seats are somewhat difficult.

Everybody around us seems to love the Britax...alot of people around us just assume that everybody uses Britax. I looked at it and didn't find anything special about it. I think the Evenflo is probably more comfortable. It seems to have alot more padding too.

We did buy the Cosco because it is the thinner plastic as a PP mentioned. The evenflo is nice and bulky and sturdy, but we bought the Cosco specifically for travel since it is a little lighter. It was only $40 at Walmart so for the few times we do use it I am pleased with the purchase.

Good luck and congrats on your new addition!

We bought this seat, and then bought another for the next kid!

It is a great seat, my sister calls it the "luxury seat", very comfy, padded. Very easy to adjust. The only downfall is it is BIG & HEAVY. We actually have another smaller & lighter seat that we use for travel.

This is what it says about the Evenflo Triumph/Orion

Available at: BRU/TRU, online (http://froogle.google.com) and www.babycenter.com/store

Features: 5-30 lbs. rear-facing, 20-40 lbs. forward-facing; EPS foam in head area; memory harness; harness height adjustment without unthreading the harness

Drawbacks: may not fit side-by-side with other car seats; harness adjuster is cumbersome; crotch strap may be too long for some children; short seat

The Triumph has a memory harness where the harness will loosen when the child is unbuckled without having to make any adjustments to the harness adjuster. To use the memory harness, buckle the child in and snug the harness so that you can get only 1 finger under the harness at the child's collarbone. To take the child out of the seat, unbuckle the harness and move the buckle tongue (that metal piece that gets inserted into the buckle) up toward the child's shoulder--this will create slack in the harness and make it easier to get the child's arm out of the harness. Pulling the buckle tongue back down to the buckle will remove the slack.

The Orion is the same seat as the Triumph, except that it lacks the memory harness feature. The Orion is not currently available in Canada.

The EPS foam looks like styrofoam. Be careful to not throw it away!

The main complaint I've heard is that some taller kids outgrow it before they're 4yrs & 40lbs (the minimum recommended age & weight to move to a BPB), because the shell on this car seat is fairly short. This requires the parents to buy yet another harnessed car seat. Just thought you'd want to know!

We have a Cosco Alpha/Omega that my ds has almost outgrown by height at 34mos because the top harness slots are too short. I just bought a Britax because I wanted my ds to stay harnessed as long as possible and this seat has the tallest top slots and seat shell of the convertibles out there. I also thought there was nothing really special about them (other than price) but now I realize that I would have saved money in the long run if I had just bought the bigger seat to begin with.

hth!

We love the Triumph. We bought our first one in 2001 for our oldest. We loved it so much that we bought another for our 2nd child. We just got rid of the first one (he grew out of it and into a booster). It was still in great condition after 4 years.
