Arrive LAX and renting a car for several days. Then we are going to DL and I don't want a car there.
If I return car to airport it is $300 cheaper than returning to Alamo at Downtown Disney.
If I return car to airport....will I be able to get to Disneyland express area as I would be outside airport

You would take the shuttle from the rental facility to lax. Just pick an airline to be dropped off at. Then go to the arrivals area and find the Disneyland express pickup at that terminal.

Of course by the time you get picked up you could be halfway to Disney on a good traffic day if you caught a cab outside the rental facility. :)

And if you miss that hour's pickup (traffic at lax, even for the shuttles, can be heinous) then you're waiting an hour and there is nothing interesting to do at lax outside the secure area.

I would use Karmel Shuttle, personally.

Have you looked into returning at the Katella location? How about at SNA? The latter still requires a cab ride back but it's quicker. Worth doing the math for all scenarios.

the Katella location is inflated also. Enterprise is reasonable but how do I get from enterprise on Katella to my good neighbor hotel?

Is it the same Alamo National Enterprise location right at Alpine Inn? They have a shuttle from that one, or grab a cab/Uber/Lyft.

Have you priced the full week rental and just leave the car parked when you're in Anaheim? It might be cheaper to keep the car and drive back to LAX at the end than pay for airport transpo x2.

...and a heck of a lot less hassle and time wasted.

how do you get back to LAX (or your departure airport) from DL if you return the car?
i would keep the car and save myself time/aggravation dealing with LA traffic

Another +1 for Karmel Shuttle here - they will get you back to LAX in plenty of time. Though I have also heard good reports about Lansky (though have not used Lansky personally).

11 days
LA to san diego to Anaheim to home
5 people that don't uber
Any other ideas?

why not keep the car for the entire trip? how are you getting from Anaheim back to the airport?

when you factor in your time to go back to LAX, cost for a one way trip back to your hotel via shuttle (or other) then cost for 5 people to go back to LAX when you leave, it might be best to keep the car.

can you add a day before you go to San Diego in Anaheim?

We are flying in and out of LAX ~~ using private car service to get to our good neighbor hotel from LAX, spending a couple of days at DL then renting a car in Anaheim taking a 5 day road trip then returning to the same location in Anaheim then using the private car service back to LAX. it is cheaper for us to do this type of combo rather than renting a car for our entire trip and paying for parking at the hotel -- saving about $250

Oh my - you're right! It's less to just keep the car $250 less.
I wonder if my hotel charges parking

just phone your hotel or check out the website, it will be listed if and how much they charge for parking
most hotels in the resort area do charge a fee for parking? $10 per night?

I did mention a *cab* early on.

But if you had been returning the car on Katella, you don't bring everyone. You drop the family and bags off, have one person return the car, and that person works out transportation.

And you never answered what enterprise location. Enterprise, National, and Alamo are one company. If you were looking at the location next to alpine inn, they have a shuttle.

Gosh I thought you had already checked those things out and that's why you were returning the car. Always price everything out before making decisions. :)

We're in same dilema as you. First 5 days are in LA, then transferring over to Anaheim. Airport is LAX.
Considering either just using uber all the way (seems to be the cheapest) or rent at LAX or near our LA hotel and return at Anaheim. Our hotel charges for parking (total $55) so we'd rather not have a car in Anaheim as it ends up being more expensive for us.

For us, we'd rather the convenience and not wasting time so wouldn't consider returning the car mid trip to LAX even if it costs a bit more.

Firstly I'd try to convince the people that 'don't use Uber' to try it. DH and I were like that until our son talked us into it for transport to and from his wedding reception. We're converts, and BFF and I use it for our mode of transport to DL and back to the hotel when we're staying offsite.

The only rental company that I found that didn't charge exorbitant one-way rental fees was Avis. Our situation would have been a one way 24 hour rental from Nor Cal to So Cal, no airports involved. It was about $100.00. For comparison, same place return was around $65.00. Hertz was over $200.00. But we found that we could do a 5 day weekend rental (Thu-Mon) for $135.00. (Prices are for Sept 2017)

Uber. We did that to & from LAX and loved it. I introduced my Mom to it doing that last year and she loved it. (There are promo codes out there if you're new so make sure to search for one before you make your first trip if you're new!)
