Car rental quesion - best way to get cheapest rates?

We will be travelling to Disney in December (man do I wish it was closer) and will most likely be needing to rent a mid-size or a mini-van (depending on who actually comes with us).

My question is what is the best way to get the best rate. I am not a member of any of the car rental "clubs". Would it be best to sign up to get a good rate. Is that what Emerald Aisle is? Just curious.

I also need to find out more about requiring the insurance. During our last trip, I got suckered into buying the full coverage, even though I thought I didn't need it. We ended up paying almost $300 for a Chevy Malibu for one week. I thought my husband was going to kill me!!!

Any information you can provide would be helpful. I hope not to make the same mistakes twice!

With regard to the insurance issued, I would check with your car insurance carrier to see if you are covered under your own auto insurance. In NY, we do not need to purchase additional insurance.

As far as rates, go to mousesavers for codes for the various rental companies. Get your best price now, make the reservation and keep checking. If you find the rates go down, make the new reservation, cancel the old.
