I have CDW (collision damage waiver) throught my Visa card but I was wondering if I should take the liability insurance.

Does anyone know if our Ontario insurance policy covers us while driving a rental car in the US for liability insurance.

Thanks.

I have a rider on my car insurance policy that I use as well as cc coverage. It costs me an extra $40.00 a year but cheaper than paying all that extra money to the rental companies.

:thumbsup2

I know my insurance company (state farms) my insurance at home covers me for down there. I was told by my agent just to take my pink slip with me. To make sure just call your agent and ask them.

I was thinking of getting coverage on my regular mastercard ...

Looks like I could do that .... i.e. add collision for $29. I know that Liability is covered through my home policy.

Otherwise it was cost more than $100 a week at the rental agency.

Anyone who knows more please post .... this thread could be important!

Ted. I have that BMO MOsiac CC. I pay a $90.00 fee to get 25% off airmiles airfare and an extra ( approx $75.00) for trip cancellation , car insurance etc. I don't understand the $29.00 collision insurance. Is that not part of the insurance package that we get with paying extra??

Not sure .... I think I may have to phone Mastercard ... I would assume that you pay $29 for the year and get covered ... but only MC knows for sure.

I just found out the my own car policy has coverage for rentals! But I'm thinking charge card coverage would be an added bonus.

My car insurance is through State farm and they give us a piece of paper to take with us for our insurance. We also have to take the pink slip outta the car as well. We have the insurance through my MC but she said this is all we need...

I am thinking that if I had an accident, I would try to put the coverage on my cc insurance as to try an avoid an insurance rate hike by putting it on my car insurance. But I am not sure whom would have to pay first. My work coverage has extra medical out of state coverage and one time I purchased extra Health insurance from Blue Cross. I actually went to the doctor for pneumonia when I was in Florida and went to the doctor for medication. When I got home, Blue Cross told me that they only will pay once OHIP and my private coverage is exhausted. After that I figured that it was stupid to buy extra insurance............but I wonder if the CC companies look at that scenario the same way. Exhaust your own private car insurance before you use theirs. Can anyone answer this??

Good question ... no idea.

i just came from the bank and would have to either pay a fee with my existing card, or get a gold one.

Ted

We called our insurance company and we are covered for any car rental in North America the same coverage we have on our vehicle at home. Watch at the counter......they like to sell you on the insurance....even though my sister had called her insurance and was told they were covered the counter person insisted they were not and that they "had" to buy the insurance....so they did......till the rest of us got there and told her she really did not "have" to....she and her husband ended up going back to the car rental counter in the airport -got an apology and insurance money refunded that they had paid.

I just spoke with my insurance company and they said that if you have OSPF27 on your auto insurance policy then you are covered for the cost of the rental car.

What seems to be misunderstood is liability. Visa cards and personal auto insurance covers liability against the car itself but if you hurt someone and they sue you then only the rental company's third party liability (which by law they have to carry) is used which may only be $20000. So if you kill someone and they judge awards $500000 then $20000 is covered by the rental car company and $480000 must be paid by the renter. Your personal auto insurance for a million dollar liability that you have only covers when it is your personal car that is involved and not a rented car. It follows the car not the individual.

My insurance company suggested that you purchase the SLI (supplemental liability insurance) which would cover you for a million dollars or purchase a umberella liability policy here but that usually costs $250 for the year.

Clear as mud?

My insurance, through State Farm, covers me for rental cars. I also have a $2 million personal umbrella policy.
