Car Rental from Halifax to Portland?

Has anyone recently rented a car in Halifax and returned it one way in Portland or Boston?

If so, did you have any problems during border crossing?

Also, which car company did you use? It appears that some do not allow cars to be brought from Canada into the US. Is this a policy for all car rental companies? Does this have anything to do with customs?

I would very much appreciate any info or suggestions. Thanks

As far as I know, there are NO rental companies that allow you to leave it in the US. It has nothing to do with customs.

If it is true the NO car rental allow US drop off consider a Uhaul van if it works for you. They do allow cross boarder drop off.
I know there can be issues even crossing provincial boarders with car rentals on some of the rate deals.

Did you check out Budget? I don't know if they allow you to drop it off in the US, but I do know that you can do a round trip. Plus they are about the only ones that do not charge extra for mileage.

Thanks for all the info. Actually it is a friend who was planning on doing this, and with all the hassle, she had decided not to anymore.

And by the way, she did call Budget and no they don't do that.

I think she's better off changing her plans.
