Hi Everybody -

Have some friends who are doing the repositioning cruise on the Wonder next month, from Port Canaveral to San Diego. They are also wanting to do some post nights in the San Diego area to visit friends, so want to rent a car.

Since I'm always raving about how helpful DISBoards folks are (even though I usually don't frequent this particular forum), I know somebody here will be able to help, so I told them I would ask you nice folks. They would like a car rental company that has a shuttle from the port in San Diego to the car rental office/lot, then from a drop off office/location (which will probably be different from the port location, I would think) to the airport for their flight home.

Thanx for any and all help, DIS'ers rock! :) :thanks::disrocks:

Just contacted the Enterprise office at 2305 Pacific Hwy. They do provide transportation from the cruise terminal to their office to pick up the car, but "aren't allowed to step foot in the airport terminal." The recommendation was to take a taxi/uber after we return the car.

Downtown sd is all so close. I would keep it simple and taxi to the airport rental car places and just return there as well. If they are only exploring the sd area that's likely where they'll be leaving from anyway.

There's also an Avis about five blocks from the pier.

Everything in downtown SD is close -- feels more like a small town than a big city. We used Enterprise at the airport when we were out there last October, but I believe Enterprise in Little Italy would be pretty close to the pier. We got great service, a 15% off coupon, and they gave us a very nice Nissan minvan.

Thanx, everybody who's answered thus far! Since my friend is now active in the thread herself, I'll bow out, but am grateful to all. :)

So here's the deal with rental cars and the San Diego Airport. A year or two ago, they built one universal rental car location (off-site) (3355 Admiral Boland Way, San Diego, CA 92101). There are airport shuttle busses that run from that parking garage to the airport and back via a private road along the back side of the runway. Any customer from any rental agency can use this free service. Its fast and convenient.

In my opinion, the best way to handle their particular situation would be to grab a cab (if not backed up) and take it to the universal car rental garage. If there is a long cab line, walk across the street to the hotel area and call an Uber for pick up there. Then when they are done with the car, they can take it to the airport drop off location and use the free shuttle to the airport.

Also, remind them to check parking prices at the hotel they are going to stay at. Some charge $50+ a day...so it may be more economical to travel by cab if they are staying local. Some of the attractions also charge a hefty parking fee, while others are free. Our downtown light rail "The Trolley" is also a great option for getting around San Diego :)

This.

For $5 a day (+$2 for the initial card) you can ride the trolleys, most of the buses practically anywhere you would like to go in San Diego. Even to Balboa Park IIRC. It's quite a deal and pretty simple. There is one bus that goes right form the Airport to the intersection at the Wyndham, if you are staying there. Much cheaper than even Uber, if you are fine with mass transit.
