Car rental and splitting stay between Disney and I-Drive

We are planning our next trip for September (if they offer free dining) and have a question regarding car rental and staying at different hotels.

If we go (for 7 days), we would most likely split our stay in 2 different places:

* Disney resort for 4 or 5 days, to take advantage of free dining and not worry about parking/car rental during our stay there

* a hotel at International Drive, as we want to hit the Universal parks (or Sea World) this time.

My question is: has anyone done this before (splitting the stay)? How do you rent a car inside Disney? Do I have to take a cab to a car rental compnay from there (if so, where)? Do companies offer a shuttle to pick you up at a Disney resort?

You can rent a car at Disney on site, they will pick you up at your resort & take you to the car care center. Or there is a rental counter at the Dolphin, and also at a hotel in Downtown Disney area.

You may want to look into the rates at the airport car rentals, we were thinking of renting for part of the week on a past trip but with the discount codes through mousesavers we were better off renting for the whole trip from the airport, instead of the car rental places in disney. It was much easier having a car while doing dining plan so we could eat at the different hotels. Also take into account what money you would have to spend for transportation to your hotel on I-drive and possibly to your hotel in disney.
